Google has been doing it for years! And the doers use googles VOIP phone numbers that bounce all over the world making it impossible to find where your money went.
One qualified guess I saw a year ago was that it is the upper management of MS themselves that want this and therefore thinks everyone wants this. Why? Because they are computer illiterate enough to not know where files end up in the operating system their company makes.
It's a good thing Linux is more accessible than ever.
If people really care about this kind of invasion of privacy, and they are afraid to use Linux, just... give it a shot. It doesn't cost anything except a little time.
Linux MINT is a very user-friendly OS, I tried it out on an old laptop. Can boot from USB for a test run to make sure it works with all the hardware (and I got it running pretty well on a 2009 potato).
