Yeah, kinda. I mean they function in the same way as they do on Twitter. And sometimes it will help get caught by a custom feed someone might put together. So not super necessary, I suppose, but they are functional.
I think that's deliberate in design - everything is designed around making consuming easier, not farming engagement. Hashtags are used by consent to create things people want to catch or avoid, and they are used in a sort of natural way to highlight "this is a main thing this post is about".
You can do lots of things with them. Feeds can reference them, clicking on them works, and you can even mute them (handy if you don't want a flood of, say, Eurovision posts when that rolls around).
Unfortunately the feed - all the feeds - broke as they did some sort of update 🙄 today a Friday WTF and they all stopped updating. Probably they need to slowly come back online and repopulate. Bummer but we soldier on with #nwslplayoff !
