I have a ton of questions, but most of all i'm just super impressed at the idea of getting it all set up on existing (and presumably underused?) hardware. recycling++
(side note love too see the beam at work on that hardware 👀)
yop! did your scraper discover it before i'd actually got it talking to the web properly? i booted it up without any nginx configuration on the proxy VPS i use just to check that my hacky setup worked
personal data server! basically, all of my data (posts, account details, etc) are stored on my PlayStation, but what i post is still pushed out to others via the main bluesky relay(s) and other services
it should work on the pro yeah, although if i recall the pro isn't quite as good for linux. i'm... honestly not sure on whether it damages the ps4. it shouldn't, but you never know i suppose. i could very easily remove the mods from this and use it as normal again
i may have nerdsniped someone into a jailbreaked kindle and/or a nintendo switch (lite), but i dont have either currently. i do have a pixel 2, if it can somehow run docker then i guess, maybe?
i got a ps4 a couple months back for some emulation stuff and honestly my number one plan for it besides that is just to use it as a nice pizza box desktop. its such a nice form factor
literally, before deciding to fully commit to the ps4 idea i was toying with building an actual server and it looked so ugly sitting on my nice wooden table compared to the playstation.
also the playstation has a light bar so instant win
i did want to port some software (such as snac2) to orbis for the hell of it but it wouldn't be exactly practical. maybe you could boot a fresh freebsd on it?
thats part of why i bought it actually. i wanted some dumps of a ps4 flash and hard drive and actual hardware to compare against when implementing stuff (for whenever i get around to that)
actually i think even ps4 linux has some issues talking to hardware like the video encoder. last i checked you have to set the output resolution at kernel compile time because of that
honestly, depends on who you are. i ran mine because "haha funny PDS on PS4" but i know people who run them because they want greater control of their data. i suppose the fear is that if in a few years bluesky turns Bad, they won't have your info and posts... who knows.
it's a PDS - Personal Data Server. it stores my personal data (email, password hash, username, etc) but still talks to the rest of the bsky network. i'm... not 100% on exactly what's stored on it but... you can read more here https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds

No headphone jack either but Apple is done with those.
What I'm saying is, understandable and relatable.
