When the Russian government paper features headlines like “Panic attack for Russia’s currency market” you know there’s a problem. Today’s Russian papers focus on the falling rouble. One paper notes that “news from the currency markets resembled reports from a war zone.” #ReadingRussia

🙏🏻 to Steve Rosenberg for consistently bringing us unbiased and relevant stories from lives behind the new Iron Curtain.

And most of the fancy stuff most Russians wear is fake. Because they have no money for the real deal.
A good example is the small community of wealthy Russians living in Germany. Though having a free life they support Putin 110%.
Your understanding of generalised Russian people Vs my living and working there and reading of people outside as well are clearly different.
Mine is crediting them with more than your scathing view
All it took was a demagogue who blamed the West and domestic traitors for their humiliation, and they were sold on the idea of Tsar Putin.
It can be fixed (Nazi Germany was) but it wouldn’t be easy.
Communist Russia collapsed - it was the “Russia” bit that upset Putin and the Russian people.
The Russians have nominally left communism behind them (although they seem to look to their past for inspiration on how to deal with current problems)
Most Russians simply want stability, and Putin...
Russia's economy is the cannibal eating its own leg to stay full.

Soon, toilet paper will replace the Ruble as TP has simply more value.
If I were Putin, I'd rather watch my back regarding Xi.
Russian central bank isn't capable of keeping the ruble stable - I remember reading something about that they couldn't/wouldn't sell their stock of dollars.
From "The Sun always rises" by Hemingway:
“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.
“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”
But if sanctioning Gazprombank is what triggered this, why wasn't it done sooner?
We allowed Ukrainians to be killed to avoid damage to our wallets.
That will be the dishonor of our generation.
enjoy munching your potatoes as you wait in the bread line 😀
Thank you Steve.
Stay safe.
And anyway, the collapsing ruble means that the things (mainly raw materials and oil) they export will become cheaper for everyone else.
Dictators never, ever die in a peaceful manner. By entering a war it helps him to maintain control, even if for a few more years.
Russia is far more heavy handed with doling out extra-judicial punishments, too, so I really won't judge Russian dissenters too harshly for not getting rid of him yet.
