I've been playing SSSC with it on. The WD changes for this one game in particular do not seem egregious but I appreciate them addressing the boss scaling and reduced XP gain at least.

I played Lunar for the first time earlier this year and I think the localisation is for the most part better than I expected (especially compared to other JRPG localisations of the time), but those moments where WD tries to add their own jokes are really terrible and completely break all immersion.

Like the script itself is really well written and flows naturally (I can't tell how closely it matches the JP script though since I've only played it in english), WD clearly has a talented team of writers who know what they're doing.

But the bad moments are really really bad.

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I do know localization purists of varying flavors. They all hate Working Designs.

Wouldn't surprise me if you see a few idiots defending WD to be contrarians, but I can't imagine it'll be anything more than that.

I think a disclaimer like “times have changed” would be okay. That old script is just for old farts who remember playing it anyway. Even then I think I’d be fine with a brand new script if it keeps that one poop joke.

I'm of... mixed emotions. In the 90's when the games were first localized, this was revolutionary and a breath of fresh air. But it was also the 90's, which were 30 years ago, so nowadays it's completely unacceptable (unless the underlying game is a comedy, which Lunar very much wasn't).

Playing through FF6 T-Edition (using the translation patch that backports the GBA script to the SNES) has made me really appreciate the work that localization is, and to understand that sometimes you HAVE to make changes, and sometimes those changes can be GREAT. Specifically, Kefka.

In the case of Working Designs, though, I would be willing to give them a pass if all they did was futz with the script. But they wrecked the Lunar games' mechanical balance in the name of difficulty for difficulty's sake. THAT's a worse sin than any badly-aged joke, IMO.

Weirdly I think in silver star they got it did good with mechanic changes. The others, ugh like every normal enemy is a tank. Lunar 2 they added save currency. Those are stupid bad.

I'm in favor of disclaimers like that... assuming that the script is an accurate translation. Working Designs's shenanigans are best kept as a historical curiosity and nothing more, in my opinion.

I can see what he was going for and am generally sympathetic, but I think the WD house style is by and large a huge swing and a miss when it comes to localization that is increasingly aging like milk.
