Seriously, creative folks: Don't be afraid to let people know your stuff is out there for them, or worry that "now is not the time for that." People are stressed and freaked out and looking for the things that will give them a moment of rest and joy. It is EXACTLY the time for what we do. Tell them.

I have been feeling flustered and guilty that I waited so long to do this. To write novels and have them released into the world by a publisher. Upset that NOW it is finally happening and I cannot fully enjoy my accomplishments because it feels wrong to celebrate at a time like this.

Bear with me, I swear this relates-- but I absorbed a lot of "it was the happiest day of my life!" messaging about wedding days. Now, I've been VERY happily married for 13 years now-- but the day of our wedding I was so stressed, I hadn't slept, my body hurt, and I sobbed at the reception. (ctd)

I want to tell you that debuting is a little like that. I'm sure some people feel good on that day/in the lead up. But you know what? A lot of people don't. Even when times are stable, promoting a book feels Bad for a lot of people before they're used to it. (still ctd, sorry!)

Maybe they're anxious, or sales are disappointing, or it just isn't what they hoped for. All those feelings are completely okay. & you're allowed to feel really sad that your book didn't come out at a better time. You should feel however you feel. But know that you're not alone.

you are now part of a community of authors who didn't have an A+ debut experience and have to learn to be proud and sad at the same time. It's hard and I don't mean to make it sound easy. But community helps you get through it. I hope you find good celebratory moments. Sorry for talking your ear off

I loved my debut (it happened in October) and have been happy with the way things have been going book-wise. But, with everything else that has been going on celebrating just feels wrong at times.
