One wonders though if we would need so many if we didn't have an economic system that rewards unchecked greed. Part of why we can't trust people to do the right thing without regulation is that there's money in doing the opposite, and we've elevated the greedy over the morally upright.

Okay, but that shouldn't stop things being reviewed from time to time, otherwise we end up with news stories about people getting arrested on the basis of laws from 1798 about owning the wrong breed of pig or something which never got updated or whatever.

Every regulation is there because something has gone wrong.

When people object to "red tape" I point out: donkey meat in lasagne, asbestosis, mis-selling PPP, human tissue collection at Bristol Royal Children's Infirmary.
