Social media companies with editorialized algorithms should be regulated like a common carrier.
If ByteDance can't own a US radio or tv station they shouldn't be allowed to own a US social media company.
Other apps with spyware features (like Temu) should have different privacy regulations applied.
It is but since we have many people who don't or can't use their brains effectively, this shit will continue to work. Sometimes I hate that my mother wouldn't allow me to be stupid.
-if there’s a compelling national security case, the American people deserve to know more than “we got a briefing.” Ukraine had a much more compelling case for banning VK and Yandex in 2017 and many still called it anti-speech 2/
-I think we should urgently pass privacy legislation that protects Americans’ data no matter if they’re using an American-made app or a foreign app. In all the time we’ve spent dicking around with this ban we could have made headway on that 3/
Yeah, but Democrats in congress don’t want to tank their own personal investments in selling us out. We have been sold the hell out to the highest bidder and no one who is elected wants to stop it.
it is objectively very bad if a president who is not even inaugurated yet can promise any company—especially one controlled by a U.S. adversary— he will simply not enforce a bipartisan law that was passed and affirmed by SCOTUS 4/
So this is social media on the eve of Trump 2.0:
- X: controlled by dude who would be a Trump official but for the ethics disclosures
-Meta: controlled by obsequious dork prepared to do anything to save his own butt
-TikTok: owned by a foreign govt that just completed its biggest influence op yet
If SC decisions can just be ignored I can think of a recent one that should also be ignored. Makes you wonder why we even still have a SC if their decisions don't carry any weight.
This is one thing I (perhaps naively) hope results form this cartoonish series of events…a serious conversation about data and privacy that leads to effective policy and (required) legislation…
Agree, but not likely to happen: look at the new cozy relationship between Trump & tech. This is prob another shameless ploy by greedy Trump to profit off a billion-dollar company. He doesn’t care one whit about our national security, the guy who stole classified docs & stored them in a bathroom?!
100%. AOC comfirmed there is no credible security risk. Instagram, Facebook, Google, DoorDash and AirBnB all collect more data than TikTok. Meta SOLD all our data to China, Russia, etc. for years. This was never about data. This is about controlling propaganda, and not Chinese. USian.
A serious country run by grown ups would have figured out how to steal the TikTok algo and give it to a US based company that put an identical copycat product online before the ban went into effect.
China has been stealing US IP for years without real consequence. About time we gave them a taste.

The age of the ADHD soundbites is having an observable effect on society.
Impatience. Disrespect. The ability to hypothetically strip down and AK45 ect..

If the data is in Singapore servers, and belongs to a private company owned by a Chinese company?
If so, pleade advise the IC.

Like I said: clown shit… and also real banana republic shit.
If this is a harbinger for things to come, yikes.

for Trump, it's not just the Bill of Rights that's too PC
it's Magna Carta + prohibition of trial by ordeal
news outlets are struggling to convey that
