The video these were made from sped up 4x. Anyone know what causes bacteria to aggregate in a line like this? Interesting to see the line heal after the ciliates disturb it. #bacteria #microscopy

Looks like bacteria growing in exopolysaccharides (goo), which they use to form larger structures for adhesion, biofilm formation, or to limit predation.

In many cases, yes, the India ink will give you a negative stain showing the EPS

This is fascinating. It's like how fish form schools and how large herbivores tend to form herds. This video shows it is effective, too. Some bacteria got picked off, but a lot of them didn't.
