It is beyond infuriating that articles that come from government funded research, for example the WHI, are behind a paywall. I already paid through my taxes.

I'll bet that all the GLP – one medications were discovered with federal grants and now they want us to pay over $1000 a month for this medication. That's robbery
And to add insult to injury in the how else can we exploit academics department, publishers now sell rights to our published work to train AI, reaping millions of dollars!
Exactly. Somehow, I keep thinking that given we're a relatively smart, driven, and skilled group, we should be able to come up with a way to reclaim academic publishing and take it out of the hands of the for-profit commercial market.
Totally! I felt the same way. So much so that a few years ago I left academia to create a new way to put publishing back in the hands of researchers and started @stacksjournal.bsky.social. Take a look -- I think you'll be really interested in what we're building over there!
The agency is required to post all research funded with public dollars to a publicly available archive. Why aren't they doing that? This is a requirement under the White House executive order on science/open data research. Also under the Open Government Data Act.
I believe all US government-funded research will be required to be open access by the end of this year.
Always assuming this is not a casualty of the new administration.
In principle I agree, BUT as editor & researcher it’s more complicated than people imagine/ want to acknowledge. Simplest & best short-term solution is 2 post all work on preprint server (all free 2 deposit & access) first. Beyond that it needs complete re-evaluation of scientific publishing.

You pay for roads through your taxes, yet there are tolls on many of them.
There, saved you the reading time!
🤣
