Fun fact: reading silently is a recent invention in the West, Romans didn't know how to do it, it took until the late Middle Ages for Europeans to generally figure it out.

I could never believe that people in antiquity, the same people who created complex societies like The Roman Republic or Athenian democracy couldn’t figure out how to read in silence.
"still staring at people reading all day, yeah, for science"
"for science"
Another rabbit hole like this: it takes our brains different amounts of time to process sound and vision. Both also travel at different speeds.
So, at almost any given time, your brain is buffering one or other to sync sound with vision in your head.
This is the 'Horizon of Simultaneity'. The point where the speed of light and sound match the processing delay in your head, and your brain doesn't need to buffer.
And if that falls outside its range, then you'll 'see' the de-sync.
