Meanwhile here I always kept thinking that the "ceasefires" were always a lie since they'd be broken within days (sometimes right the following day). I'm not sure why the heck anybody keeps taking them seriously, even the ones directly involved.

My history is a little rusty but I believe it was to keep the super powers at the time of founding from taking their ball and going home. If the U.S., Britain, Russia, etc had refused to join, the UN wouldn’t have as much of a purpose.

I’m sure it’s a bit more nuanced than that.

Absolutely. Is your screen shot from Financial Times? What's missing, and I think chillingly important, is the cover-story that Israeli gov't is " leaking"-- that the military objective is to boost the power of armed criminals in Gaza in hopes they will defeat Hamas.
