other than things like Reddit or bsky, how do people discover things to read on the internet? I feel like everything I read is mediated through a platform in some way, whereas there are folks on Pinboard who seem to have an uncanny ability to discover totally unexpected things that I *love*

Maybe you could start a book feed?
Iβm waiting for Tome to come out next week (a booktokerβs response to the ban)
My wife has also made it her mission to read through i think the entirety of all the Hugo winners, Locus winners, etc and has found a number of authors she really enjoys.
I follow a few people on StoryGraph and peek at their lists too.
Unaware of Pinboard(s)?

I'll look up "capybara" & twenty minutes of link-hopping later, I'll find myself leaving Wikipedia to buy the book about the history of servants in nineteenth century Britain mentioned in the reference section of the last Wikipedia article.

Pixalfed is also pretty good but, I'm a fan of keeping my content in one place so I'll be waiting.

It's not really a "platform", because every comic is hosted on its own website, and it gives you a random selection of comics to discover
It's how I found gems like Go Get a Roomie, Ozzie the Vampire, and more

Iβm so old I remember AOL chat rooms and talking to random ass people across the US & Canada about who had the better beer or sport teams.

CR: Mythos (Fry), Henry Luce and his American Century (some biographer), Sparks (Johnson).
Also use Storygraph as a way to track my reading and find recs. It's way better than Goodreads.
Other than that, I tend to just scroll through or walk through the bookstore and see what my eye catches haha.
Sometimes Iβll get my recs from the Shakespeare and co podcast, BBC culture page is another one where Iβve gotten good recs.
Social media for credible information is nonsense. There's more algorithms and opinion on social media to manipulate you than anything else....
