Conservatives have always hated the civil rights act. That's when private schools led by segregationist preachers like Jerry Falwell got their start. With Trump it's a return to Jim Crow south.

Yes, true. But it's worse than that. The real motivation behind the scheme to vilify, undermine and ultimately destroy our public schools, is to create a White Supremacist Oligarchy in which only kids from rich white families get a good-quality education.

Yeah no doubt. There are definitely people out there pushing these policies with that agenda. The real work for me, at least, is just making sure people actually get what’s going on so they don’t just buy into it. It’s all about helping folks see who’s cashing in and who’s getting screwed over.

That approach rarely works. We need ways to spark interest; otherwise, we miss opportunities to better our communities. Meeting people where they are is important to counter ineffective policies, like school vouchers, that don’t truly help us.

I agree. It’s been shown that sitting down and discussing the specifics of progressive vs conservative/regressive policies tends to move people left. Still the echo chamber effect and the wildly powerful right wing media makes it very difficult to get the message to the people that need to hear it.

In Mississippi the constitution specifically forbids using public funds from being used to support any school that is not free! The turds running the state are trying hard to get around it!

I went to a segregated high school in Albany, GA, the site of the first sidewalk sit-ins. The high school integrated the next year (1965) and by the time I returned for my 10th AHS reunion, nearly all my favorite teachers had gone to new, white, private schools created to avoid integration.
