I saw a doc - Frontline or similar - on this circa 1980s/90s. This position is wild west unregulated in many areas of the US. They documented many cases of incompetence and rogue coroners that had serious negative effects on the communities

The five states with the lowest average salaries for coroners are South Carolina ($34,780), Arkansas ($35,310), Mississippi ($35,630), Alabama ($36,380), and West Virginia ($37,100).

When you look at the Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow case, just for one, you can see how having a qualified forensic pathologist exam every unattended death would've caught Daybell at the time of his wife's death.

It would be interesting to look at any state that has coroners over a medical examiner system. In PA, the coroner decides who needs autopsies. In some states with MEs, all deaths outside hospitals (and many within) get autopsies. How many questionable deaths are missed?

Idaho doesn’t care about children dying. Just Google “Followers of Christ” fellowship in Canyon County. This law is intended to cover up over 200 deaths of children that the state refuses to protect.
