Normal people outside of gaming don’t watch The Game Awards, the majority of gamers don’t watch The Game Awards, this isn’t the Oscars, it never will be, it’s a commercial you’re streaming on YouTube with a decreasing cultural footprint.

For the past like. Idk good few years it's just been the place where kojima shows shit off other than TGS lmao it really doesn't have much more actual value than being a commercial for Geoff's rich friends
ABSOLUTELY. I still think back to that annoucement so often. The man is good at selling intrigue if nothing else, but until he has another batshit announcement like that specifically for his bud Geoff's little show, the reasons to watch dwindle 😁😁😁
Finally movie stars are good at entertaining people from a stage. It's literally what they do for a living.
Game devs typically aren't which gives the whole thing an awkwardness that is hard to watch.
I'm all for celebrating our achievements, but this format is so unnatural and cringe worthy.
Another thing that offends me a bit about the Game Awards is that it's aping the movie industry as if it's something we should aspire to become more similar to. I don't want the game industry to revolve around celebrities and the fixation on status that comes with it.
It's sheer idiocy. For the Oscars it's at least conceivable that the judges have watched all the good movies that year, but when it comes to games - how many games can you really play all the way through in a year.
i agreed with this until this year but now way way more young people (like under 25s tbc) seem to treat them the way i treated e3 at their age. i don't think they "matter" but i also don't think their footprint is decreasing
Yeah thats the thing about the game awards is that it's def one of the most openly fake award shows and that is def saying something. Anyway: if usada pekora doesnt take home content creator of the year, I will be strapping a bomb to my chest and causing an Incident.
I'll never understand the criticism of the Game Awards that "it's a commercial". Of course? People watch it for announcements. This is not a secret, and for the people who watch it's a draw not a thing they endure.
I think GA’s imprint continues to broaden while its original goals continue to diminish. Is it awards or an E3 replacement? The “star power” announcers makes the divide increasingly obscured. I don’t tune into the Oscar’s to find out about upcoming movies. They have the power to change but won’t
"Gaming needs their own Oscars" is so funny because like, almost nobody gives a shit about the Oscars outside of MAYBE Best Picture and those that do care about it generally think they suck and never get it right.
Which uh, I guess they sort of succeeded on that front.
The pandemic really pushed them through & they’ve been climbing ever since.
Partially for the awards, mostly for the trailers/releases.
Either way, they’re proper popular.
