Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 is on Game Pass which is perfect because I've seen a lot of people play Avowed and say "Should I play Pillars?" and that kinda makes it a no-brainer.

I've got POE installed. What's preventing me from giving it a go is that
1. I heard it has A LOT of reading.
2. Fans seem to be back and forth on whether real time combat is viable or not.
Ehh, the main problem with RTWP combat is that usually it's applied to systems that aren't designed for it. PoE is different in that the combat is very obviously and competently designed for that format, it works much better.
RTWP is great, and it has as much reading as you want to do. My wife and I did not consider it a lot of reading and we aren't necessarily avid readers. My wife wasn't even playing it and could follow along - in her own words, "If I could follow it without reading 90% of it, it can't be a lot."
A lot of what pulls my interest in Avowed is related to my experience with these two titles. It was so cool seeing the Caed Nua flag in Paradis, as an early example
Probably the best-written RPGs I've played, flatly.
Plus, it's nice that they're actually built for RTWP instead of trying to haphazardly shove D&D into that box the way Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous do! Used to think I hate RTWP but no, I just wanted a system for it that made sense!
On the first time I played PoE 1, since my default play style involves accepting side quests and helping NPCs, I chose the priest subclass which gets divine favor for honesty and kindness: that is, priest of Eothas.

Absolutely no regrets, especially in the game's first dungeon!
Anyone know how’s it is on console or how it feels to use a controller? I prefer playing this style of game on the PC but I also enjoy laying on the couch.
Scientists are still trying to figure out how Pillars 1 was so magnificently ported to console. It's about as perfect a transition as you could have. Deadfire however draws my ire, and it's also just a bad, buggy port.
Thanks I might give it a look then. Jokes aside I really do like the idea being on a ship with a crew and traveling places which iirc is a mechanic in 2.
Yep it’s a cool mechanic though I didn’t really love the ship combat and just did boarding actions which are a standard fight against dudes instead of the text-based thing they did for ship-to-ship engagements
No. POE start by giving you a good recap of main plot in POE1. You miss out on understanding why some reocurring NPC's are very familiar to you, but that's about it.
Sorry point of clarification: ignore the NPCs with gold nameplates, they are kickstarter backer NPCs and have a nonessential text blurb when you click on them but they are useless except if you want to kill them for their items
Honestly the Loredumps aren't even bad at all until you start Act 3, then it's a lot of Glanfathan bullshit that ultimately has no bearing on anything (this post brought to you by the loyal followers of Admeth Hadret).
For real though I feel Disco Elysium is 10x times as bad with lore dumps.
Word of warning, Pillars 1 has *growing pains*. It's great, but they will dump a *lot* of text on you from very early on and it very seldom lets up. The White March expansion is *much* better about this though and carries that balance through to the sequel.
I played them both before playing Avowed and it's been cool to have a window into the world from having the backstory of the world. Pillars 2 is great for the Baldur's Gate 3 crowd because they give you the option between Turn Based and Real Time w/Pause combat.
Yeah getting a full party ASAP with the companions you find and inn hirelings makes the early game way less punishing. I also recommend setting combat to go automatically to half speed, and fiddling with the auto-pause options to make it less overwhelming
I feel like people boot up Pillars though and then experience the combat for the first time, and then question their life decisions before clicking uninstall.
i was always in love with poe. there are (esp were) so few games that even try that formula, and it is just perfect.
i mean, disclaimer, baldur's gate (1), icewind dale, etc were pretty much obsessions of mine back in the day.
