Australian kids are smart, good lateral thinkers & problem solvers. The less wealthy need a fair go, to be respected enough by government to bring them out of poverty & give them some dignity. Kids see the poor, rundown schools, the rich ones gloat & the poor ones know they are being left behind.

We have two teens at the local inner/mid-ring Melbourne secondary college. Their catchment comes from 3 main, strong primary schools (with PYP IB programs). Kids left the most prestigious private schools to change to the secondary college at Yr 10/11. They just ‘didn’t like it’ and are happy now.

It is not a selective school. It gets better VCE results than many of the prestigious ($40k per annum and above) private schools. And it also does not ask students to leave or not sit exams in Year 12 (which those $40k per annum schools do to protect their rating/scores).

It’s a real mix. It’s middle ring Melbourne with apartments, some government housing and also students catching train from further afield. The school supports some families and students (subsidises to cover excursions/incursions, breakfast club, plus lunch and ‘holiday packs’ etc), ‘homework help.’

They like to keep a section of the community on their knees. I believe they want that section increased, not decreased. The greater we are educated, the harder it is to govern us. Thats my assumption anyway. 😓
