As Canadians, we used to be encouraged to wear maple leafs on our backpacks etc when travelling so others wouldn't mistake us for American... That was in the 90s. Unfortunately, y'all have been treated warily for a lot longer than this, it's just gonna get waaaaay worse

Playing any national anthem before a sports game is fucking jingoist nonsense anyway. The only time it makes the slightest amount of sense is during the Olympics, since the teams are explicitly separated by nationality.

I do want it to be clear, years ago there was a hockey game where the mic failed half way through the American national anthem and so the entirely Canadian audience all sang in unison to complete it and honor our American friends.
