It's not. AI like everything can be used for good and for evil. Canada is home to world-renowned AI researchers and scientists trying to use AI for good. I see Carney's AI economy as help Canadians and SMBs use AI to overcompete against big tech in the US.

And how is that commercialization going? Researchers in Canada have a tough time turning that into commercial opportunities which means it’s mostly government that has access on a grand scale. There is also a problem getting venture capitalists in Canada to put up the money to do so

In the interview with NES that I shared a few days ago, they talked about this. He said if a big tech company builds a data center in Canada, they need to allocate a portion of that to Canadian companies to use and upskilling workers to take advantage of the technology not just be end users.

We could be investing in researchers directly or indirectly through increasing funding/research grants to our universities. Giving venture capital, whose only goal is unbridled profit before anything, public money for environmentally harmful datacenters seems to only guarantee worst case outcomes

A lot of the "big tech" cloud servers that folks currently use could be done at the local/community level (and use much less power) using free/libre/open source tools like "Next Cloud". Imagine a little cloud server that just handled a single apartment building run by residents?

A friend actually mentioned being in a public consult about how people felt about burying radioactive waste on some reserve land a couple hundred km outside London. She asked if the locals there had been consulted and apparently that wasn't "in the scope of discussion that day".
