The government got 9,708,716 votes. If the petition gets a million of the 19,100,624 who didn't vote for the current government to sign their silly petition then the idea that it will overturn the election result is pretty laughable, yes.
They aren’t silent and they are not a majority, that’s about the size of it. This “disruption” tactic fills the void left by the lack of an fully formed opposition party.
Except it isn’t funny. It’s like watching footage of a nervous, incompetent burglar repeatedly trying to get into your home but there is no alarm, nobody is intervening and they aren’t stopping
The first few attempts will fail but if they keep trying if not opposed eventually they will succeed.
See this nonsense for what it is ‘a pilot’ for something much nastier. It needs a massive reaction to kill it in the crib or unopposed those behind it will improve, evolve and alter their approach until it becomes a massive problem.
I know that it's happening, but like... even say 1 million are fruadulent. That's still ~1.4 mil who decided to sign.
Even if it's 2 million fraudulent sigs, that's 400k people who decided to sign.
Like unless this spamming is way more intense than I'm assuming, it's not a good sign for the gov.
Not really - the right is heavily radicalised and it’s being pushed by a number of right/far-right voices, of course it’s going to get a load of signatures
That's still a ridiculously small number of people compared to the people who *recently* voted for a different Government.
This is hilarious drivel.
Makes absolutely *no fucking difference* to the very large Government majority.
Millions of people voted against the government. The only people it's an embarrassment to is people who think it's going to make the slightest difference to a government with landslide majority for roughly another 4.5 years. Laughable.
The embarrasing part is that there's gonna have to have a debate on the topic, which will mostly just be an opportunity for the other parties to promote themselves.
(Also 34% is not a landslide)
It doesn't need to be debated. Just considered for debate. It won't be debated. The right lost, they've had 1 gigantic tantrum since. "Angela Rayner ate toast made with an M&S loaf in slap in the face to impoverished brits" etc. Frankly, it's tedious given they had 14 years and screwed the pooch
It's all a bit boring listening to them go on. They did it for 14 years while in power and have just upped the ante like the last 14 didn't happen or the predicament in which we find ourselves isnt their/their preferred govt's fault.
411 out of 650 seats is a landslide. You're counting the wrong thing! An early General Election would probably require the government to lose a confidence vote.
The government has to consider it for a debate. There won't be one and if there was it could be a confidence vote and they'd win hands down
I will thank you for informing me that the petition system doesn't actually require a debate occur.
Gov losing confidence wouldn't cause a GE, as any brit should well know by now.
Labour intake were selected for loyalty; even if Starmer lost confidence they'd just replace him Streeting or smth
It's not sufficient but in current circumstances most likely necessary and the point is moot with the massive government majority.
I was just pointing out that there won't be a debate and if there was the government would win easily. Hardly an embarrassment except to the other side.
are you for real? Reform & Tory voters signing a petition that they dont want a Labour govt is embarrassing? How? we know they dont want it, we saw in the General Election and THEY LOST. all it does is show the signers a)dont understand UK law b)are dickheads
Oi! Don't ignore the twitter nazis in other countries also signing it fraudulently!
Also it shows the website needs serious renovations to stop that sort of thing lol
Is it, though? Because *I* think it's funny and *you* think it's funny and *objectively* speaking yeah, it's hilarious, BUT when we think this and the pigeons playing chess still take it seriously bad things have been happening lately...
Without making the gammon sweat.... but I think we should have another petition with regards to over turning the referendum and rejoining the EU....Surely that would reach over 2 million? 🤷♂️
I'm finding it hilarious. The unbridled excitement about a number ridiculously inflated by false and overseas signatories, just so the world knows the people who didn't vote Labour, still wouldn't, and it makes not a jot of difference to the term of office. Kills the credibility of petitions, though
See it as an opportunity. Previously if you wanted to find a 🤡 you’d go to Check-a-Clown but now you just need to look for anyone reposting the petition thing
And how many people didn’t vote Labour at the last GE? At least 9 million voted Tory 🙄
Funny watching all the twats on X getting over excited about it tho 🤣
It's objectively hilarious. The same people whose refrain has been "You lost, get over it" for the past eight years are now having public tantrums about being unable to get over losing the last general election.
Agreed. Who’d have thought that farmers and Clarkson want a different government.
I remember working in Westminster meeting a senior clergyman during the fuel crises when farmers were blockading oil refineries. (Causing ambulances to run out of fuel no less - Climate protestors deserve what now?)
I’ll never forget the clergy’s response when I explained my concern about not supporting a union (the farmers union): where were the fathers union when Maggie was destroying the miners towns and villages.
… and pathetic.
I’m appalled at the naive blundering of Starmer & Reeves but completely mindful of the Westminster democratic process.
Too many think democracy is a perpetual ‘plebiscite’!
I was wondering if everyone should sign it just for a laugh.
They’d get really wound up if a hundred million or so signed up & were rightly told - “you can all have an election in about 4 or 5 years time.”
really funny watching the right pulling the exact same shit liberals been doing and then having the exact same reaction - ‘what do you *mean* we did a petition and they’re not listening to us?!?!’
I'm not exactly over keen on this government, I certainly don't agree with certain policies but I wouldn't sign that for 2 reasons
1. It's utterly pointless
2.It's being driven by the right who want Reform in charge.
I'm so glad you said that. I was getting annoyed by it (asked on a local Mums' Whatsapp group to sign - a group generally used to give away outgrown kids' clothes or rehome pot plants etc). Forgot to switch on my sense of humour - now done - meltdown averted. Thank you.
Funny too, because those of us on the Left, who knew 'change' meant turning Labour into Tory Story 2, despise Starmer + want Labour in current guise gone. We just have the intelligence to know a GE isn't happening
What's winding me up is that our PM had to address that crap... whether his guys didn't know about the bot bloating votes, he should have laughed it off, that same way the Tories did at every poll calling our them to explain EVERYTHING they screwed up for 14 years
Don't agree. It is malicious nonsense and intended to undermine democracy. But - predictably - it is getting attention, and nowhere near enough denunciation.

I could get 35 signatures on a petition asking for jam with my tea, and it would be equally crisis.
(Jam in tea is good!)
The first few attempts will fail but if they keep trying if not opposed eventually they will succeed.
What's up with everyone presuming that I'm completely ignorant on the matter?
Even if it's 2 million fraudulent sigs, that's 400k people who decided to sign.

(fr tho, I have been informed that a debate is not mandatory)
The word has lost al.ost all meaning now.

I'm laughing. And scared. I don't know.

So informative yet so well put.

Me: You didn't even vote, you stupid tit.

I'm pretty sure 97% of signatories opposed a second brexit referendum. But, stupid is as stupid does.
Only fair.🤔
Made up people count too!
1. It's utterly pointless
2.It's being driven by the right who want Reform in charge.
But I get it, it’s mad that someone on that group thought that was appropriate.
It is malicious nonsense, but presumably a lot of Reform voters have signed and I think it shows the contempt some of them have for the Government.
The same people who told Remainers "You lost, get over it"?
They are angry they did not get the result they wanted.
