Today I joined 3 Counties radio where they asked - is immigration the number one issue that politicians should be talking about?
I said no.
We need to talk about the catastrophic impacts of a stagnant, ageing population WITHOUT immigration

The fact that climate collapse will end civilisation fairly soon
Seems important tbf
Aren't you living in Portugal???
But we still have same problems and new ones, who will they blame then for the problems?
Why not instead fix problems that lead to why people blame foreigners.
Starting with how economy works!
Is there a link with how the economy has been run for last 50 years & the hard working people have become poorer and the rich become richer?
But you will need more immigrants until you find your new model.
That would even up the numbers, as I suspect more UK citizens would move to the EU than EU citizens move to the UK.
All of this tax is paid into the economy which is good for everyone.
Immigrants don't increase the welfare bill. They contribute more than they take.
And
My future need for carers won't involve me being paid welfare benefits.
It will involve me finding (and paying) someone to do the care.
Take away immigrants - who cares for me?
And what is the cost to the countries they come from, losing their young workers who are needed to support their pensioners.
Lots of us picking up today on that dreadful quote reportedly from a Labour MP taking about setting immigration number targets 🤦🏼
We are all now getting that message out there...we need immigration to survive and growth won't happen without it
And the fascists are rallying against immigrants, regardless of whether they are part of our society, work here, have a family...
Always the same lies about alleged knife attacks or even rapes...

Talking about a generation who fought back against the Establishment , stood up for civil rights , against misogyny.
Ageism , loud and clear .
My pension contributions don't come back to me with the same serial number, they pay those currently retired.
If I want my pension paid, I rely on workers to pay it. Simple arithmetic that more older people, living longer needs more younger people.
All about being less able, not unable.
It seems that original response missed the nuances of the polychotomy.
Your response is a red herring fallacy and frankly just odd.
I think she is using the word stagnant in the sense its often used re economies of 'not growing / increasing' (nor declining) about population numbers.
Which specific generation did you mean ?
Most of the rental property is owned by boomers using the BTL 'investment' to fund their pensions after they've bought up all the cheap property from R2B in the 80's
More like Reality, loud and clear.
Or give your head a wobble
Since it's relevant, none of this is new. It's been done before and it never helps the country. There's more in the thread, including sources.
Luckily we could afford to buy in good local carers to help. 😢
We need leaders to lead on this, and communicate to the electorate that this isn't an issue that will be solved by cutting services and stopping small boat arrivals 🙄
There could perhaps be an alternative, sustainable model that doesn't rely on immigration. But I can't recall any presenting it in the UK yet.
If it was pointed out the people actually in work fund their pensions, attitudes would change.
And with more people leaving employment than entering, you have to top up the workforce somehow.
The first move is getting us back into the EU. There may be some young europeans still mad enough to want to live here.
Interesting, that part of theirs is depopulation of rural areas.
Where are we now, punish pensioners!
