Same as in other authoritarian nations like Russia and Hungary. The major press will report on them but dictate the relevance by minimizing their placement.
More effective coverage is on socials and local news. These start at the bottom with us citizens and work up. I was an avid NYT, WAPO, LAT and WSJ reader for decades. Had to throw them overboard because they suck.
somehow tens of thousands coming out to protest is a niche issue but don't get them started on stories about the 3 undecided voters left in the country that they need to interview
I've seen 1.5 million -- and I don't think anyone's got a definitive list of all the small towns and neighborhood protests. Saw one on the other site of two very elderly women sitting on a bench along a road with a flag and "No Kings" sign.
PEACEFUL protests don't get covered. But when protests get ugly (for whatever reasons - police, counter protests etc.), then there is plenty of coverage on TV, on social media, and on news websites.
Mainstream media sure didn't hate protests back in 2010 when the Tea Party protests happened. The coverage of those was wildly disproportionate to the protest sizes - which generally were small. These protests are far larger but are getting dramatically less coverage;
The NYT's wildly biased coverage helped give us Trump in 2016 and 2024. Then, since Trump 2024 inauguration, they've aggressively covered the Trump/Musk outrages. But now that large numbers of people are protesting, they're ignoring it.
They cannot or must give low or negative coverage to protests that go against the corporate interests of their employers.
I really thought that was obvious, especially with right-wing billionaire corps owning most of media but apparently its not… ever heard “the revolution will not be televised”?
It isn't "savvy" and anyone can inform themselves and protest, but in their minds only elite journalists can "know" (i.e. be told by the powerful) what is REALLY going on.
Just like with Trump voters, they're never going to admit how badly they got it wrong. Accurately reporting on it now would beg the question of why they didn't do it before. That's why they won't do it.
remember the Tea Party protests and how all these media organizations made them seem bigger and more serious than they really are? if things are going to change in the US and the rest of the world, then the conservative media empire needs to crumble ... I'll be happy if it's just the Murdochs ...
Brazilian here. I stopped trusting NYT 21 years ago, when it started engaging in geopolitical gossip, taking advantage of Lula's efforts to implement sugarcane for biodigestor fuel, vehicular fuel and soft power booze.
Same as it ever was. Basically the NYT coverage of Iraq War protests was buried unless there was a black bloc incident or something of that sort that let them be stenographers for the NYPD.
🤬🤬🤬
And this is why people in other countries are thinking Americans don’t care — our own media isn’t even covering what’s going on. This is what obeying in advance looks like 🤬 #handsoff

Not.

by 2020 we were dead
So of course they despise them

Remember those frat boys making ape gestures?
It's like when the same GOP operative keeps getting interviewed by NYT as an undecided "concerned citizen."
Or the multiple interviews of Trump voters in diners because readers need to *understand* them.
It's grotesque.

WE ARE NOT ALONE!
Look at us all over the country! Look at France!

Not much...
A story that broke way back [checks notes] last week.
I mean, washpo, we know.
