Imo there's a genuine discussion to be had about the fast fashion-ification of subcultures enabled by stuff like Tiktok where they are boiled further down from communities into aesthetics you buy. But yeah a lot of it is people pointing at young people doing their thing and calling them posers lol

For a live action short film that even I wasn't aware existed and I consider myself somewhat a fan of his. My point is his/similar films received a backlash that was disproportionate to their impact on the mainstream film industry, at least compared to the backlash the MCU trend has gotten.

Is my calibration totally off on this being from NYC? In that era “hipster” was synonymous with gentrification. It felt like aspects of alt culture calcifying into a palatable mainstream marketing demographic, similar to “Big Nerd”. The blowback felt like ppl pointing out it was a shallow trend.

I lived in a very “cool” part of LA during that time period, and there seemed to be a need for a word meaning “someone who tries endlessly to be a trendsetter but wants everyone to believe it’s effortless.” “Hipster” and “scenester” got tossed around, “hipster” won.

Yeah, I think it always carried the trend-chaser & yuppie connotations for me, which is why I didn’t clock the blowback as being closed-minded, like so many in that thread. I get how it can be, coming from groups for whom even curly mustaches & artisanal pickles are not normative enough.
