My recollection of 2016-2017 is that there were vocal minorities on both the center left and the far left who were normalizing Trump and minimizing the potential risk. Bolstering the credibility of this memory is the fact that this nearly always happens when fascists run for office and win.

My lay understanding is that many people who have very little in terms of social power - wealth, class, upbringing, education - and feel those things can't be increased, will cling to what they do have - gender, race - and try to make it more valuable. Racism, sexism etc have value.
