People forget that when airlines began to set up shop in the 1930's, being a registered nurse was a requirement for all flight attendants. A shortage of nurses during WWII cut this requirement, but Pan-Am and other airlines tried to hire as many as possible. It's still a massive resumé boon.

Fun fact- studies determined that airbags in airplanes would reduce severity of injuries and save lives… but few enough deaths and injuries happen where they would make a difference so it is cheaper to just pay the settlements. That’s why they aren’t a thing.

The FAs on that flight were absolute rock stars. Turned upside down, disoriented, scrambled, and they did their jobs perfectly - got everyone out quickly and efficiently. That flight crew saved lives for sure.

I think it's beyond that, & rather that whenever the plane is on the ground the FAs aren't getting paid. So even if you're in your plane, on the ground, & the flight is delayed for whatever reason, your FAs aren't getting paid. They are, however, still doing their jobs, & taking care of passengers.

Stuck for hours? Passengers freaking out because they may miss flights or are just anxious? People having medical issues? Needing to feed/water passengers to keep them happy/keep blood sugar up? Doesn't matter, they're still not paid if they're on the ground. It's robbery, plain & simple.

Really depends on the airline but generally once the door is closed or the brakes are released, we get paid. We don't get paid for sitting in the airport and very few get paid for boarding and deplaning. We get half our wage for boarding for some reason?

In general I think flight attendants deserve their own thin line shirt for being such respectable people. If you see a pin on a flight attendant, ask them about it so they can speak out about the issue with legal protections. It's a labor law speech restriction we can all help them express by inquiring about it.
