There's also the factor that if the short-term plan is a cataclysmic war against China followed by endless dominance with AGI/ASI (which is at least in some people's heads at Washington) you easily come to the conclusion that you don't really need soldiers at all after that.

I think Trump is likely to conflate challenges to his ego, i.e. frank criticism of what he thinks is possible, as threats to his power. Even if the military is unlikely to actually depose him, he'll have it neutered anyway because it's so used to a relatively unpoliticised relationship with POTUS
