Yawn. Linux user since around 1997. Been hearing this crap for years. Still enjoy using a computer and don't hate myself but.....I do absolutely hate Microsoft. Keep flagellating yourself if it makes you happy. You must like abusing yourself and wasting money.
I've been using it ever since Apple turned my 27" Mac into a giant fucking iphone when they ditched their old UI rules after 10.6.8 Snow Leopard was replaced.
Ubuntu has been pretty good for me, but I’ve had it sputter and die when it tries to do OS updates. (I think it still wants to do 24.04.01 but I don’t want the headache of having no OS lol)
It definitely depends on your use cases, as some of the replies say below. Some things are better on Linux, while others are worse. (I dualboot Windows and Linux, so I've tried many things on both)
I've lived with incurable chronic pain since the year 2000 with no pain relief, I'm a masochist for real and can relax to what would have a normal person pass out, If I were a cat I'd be on my very last life, I know the deepest pits of hell..
..but I still can't hate life enough to main Windows!
Dual boot is the answer. I'm currently running Fedora 99% of the time, but for that 1% where I can't do something on it or don't feel like spending a ton of time on figuring out how to do it I just boot up Windows.
I type 1 line to have the browser installed. Took maybe 15 seconds. I did not had to have other browser to locate and download something from some site
You only have to do the hard migration stuff one time. Once you have a Linux workflow that works, you’ll ask yourself why you stuck with anything else for so long.
Every few years I try Linux on the Desktop again, and then I hit WiFi or Audio or Bluetooth issues and remember that I have shit to get done. I’m also scarred from my Slackware-on-22-diskettes days, when “user control” meant (in my case) “able to configure X to do permanent damage to your monitor.“
yeah I mean I'll dual boot, I just have a project where I want to throw GPU at it and all my Windows-side dev stuff is under WSL so I'm kinda screwed. Unless I do all the dev on my Mac because there's a Metal port already in place
for a while I was doing everything on my Mac because I have a M1 Max from an old startup, but, y'know, I did just build a 9800X3D, and I am the one resident WSL2 liker
but now I find myself needing a gee-pew and...oh no
VM with gpu passthrough is so much better. You can run same VM in a resizable window if need just quick access and have other instance of this VM with full GPU passthrough if you need 3D.
Installing Fedora 41 on my self-built computer was the easiest and most trouble-free experience I’ve ever had of installing any OS on any computer ever, ever since I moved from Amiga to PC in 1998.
everything depends on a perspective - for me somebody still using windows or other close source os must hate himself. im using linux on both desktop pc and a laptop - the settings files 'dotfiles' were easy to copy. I even copied from desktop to old laptop one of windows VMs and it works fine.
Ive been using Linux for a while and it's 90% there, but you can occasionally get weird jank (e.g. Zoom doesn't render emojis in chat). I'm fairly happy with it but I'm mostly playing games that run on Steam or Lutris, web browsing, and coding.
No!!!! Linux can be written to a 16gb thumbdrive.
Don't want to run Linux? Do not insert thumbdrive prior to power on the computer.
Use your desktop hard drive for data storage.
i tried to install arch years ago and could not do it. i could not figure out why it wasn’t working and it kept making my ancient dell laptop freak out. eventually i caved and used a different, easier, distro. this has been my secret shame for years.
Get Pop OS if you have an NVIDIA card because every other distro is gonna make you suicidal and DO NOT listen to anyone saying otherwise they’re lying bastards

Put it on a VM. Lol
Just be happy you don’t have to get PCMCIA working, enable support for non-SoundBlaster compatible sound cards or use a WinModem.
Admitedly, I haven't seen a thing about it for years, so maybe not...
I recommend either Mint or EndeavourOS. 👍🏻
Remember that you made this choice and that you are doing this to yourself.

(don’t even get me started on video)
Now, if you are doing Gentoo, or unguided Arch, that's how you learn to really hate yourself.
