I'm still a bit in awe that Sony's takeaway from Concord's failure is that 'live service games are doomed'. Especially after watching Marvel Rivals swoop in and completely eat their lunch.
So what do they do? Cancel a years-in-dev God Of War, because nobody would ever want to play one of THOSE...

It's a rash decision but it's understandable
A game like God of War does not. Them realizing it's a stupid idea is correct
It seems like an extra layer of wastefulness.
Losing those skilled devs is detrimental to the entire industry when gamers are complaining about poor performance of PC ports
There's only so many live services that can be successful at a time.
It's a terrible model and I hope it dies.
I'd argue they didn't go hard enough. I loved O.G. Marathon and would've applauded them nuking whatever the new one is and making it SP.
Horizon would be better for it if you're talking about Sony IP's
Ubisoft's Brawhalla has 10-15x the players and a reasonably priced 'buy all characters now and forever' pack.
Where as shooters etc you can have a relatively small team and make quick cash with character packs , emotes etc aka Fortnite etc
Most CEOs we see these days know how to do one thing : be a CEO.
At least the rapey shitstains at Ubisoft have VG experience…
I'm the first one to say the live service market is over saturated (especially with hero shooters) and too many times companies put all their eggs in one basket but it can work when done well.
It needs to feel alive.
F2P games recently have enough game-play and variety to keep people actually coming back to play more.
