Hey yup, I’ve absolutely caught them humming that tune. My kids don’t play Roblox but it definitely got through to them via the Mr. Beast to memes to Youtube shorts pipeline, with probably some schoolyard peppered in. They think of it as a game show and not as an ultra-violent Netflix show.

Roblox clones weren't so surprising (they'll steal any IP they can), but what really shocked me after season 1 was my kids "playing squid game" in PE at school. Red light/green light, but the PE coach and 3rd graders relating it to Squid Game.

Yes! He came home saying they "played Squid Games" in PE. He had already played red light/green light with the creepy statue in Roblox and was aware it was a Netflix show. I had him clarify, and he said the coach called it that. I imagine the coach was aware of the Roblox trend and ... (1/2)

Didn't happen with season 2, but season 1, I had so many roblox kids showing up in the Spooky Squid Games discord server and then getting angry when they realized it had nothing to do with roblox or the show. Made me really aware of how big of thing it had become with children.

My daughter is 6 and literally just the other day asked to play “Squid Games Red Light Green Light”. This stuff is also all over Minecraft videos which she loves right now. Also various “kids”YouTubers I’ve seen are tapping into the vein as well, Lankybox even has a song.

Lankybox and Roblox is how my seven year-old found out about it. Thankfully we were able to tell her it's not appropriate and now she switches to another game/video when it pops up. But it's everywhere in the kid internet space to a disturbing amount.

We were lucky that my kids' school had also put out some notices about how Squid Game references weren't allowed on school grounds, so we had an official "these school rules say you shouldn't be interacting with this subject."

I think it's also helped that from a very early age (3-4 years old) when we were introducing things like YouTube we had discussions about how some videos are not appropriate and how to avoid them/stop watching them. We haven't had pushback so far, but we'll see how that goes as they get older.

Honestly, best I could come up with was “it’s for older kids”. Landed like a lead balloon when the other kids at school are all playing Squid Games at recess. From what I can tell, YouTube is where all of these kids are getting it. So compromises have been made.

Red light/Green Light is only game my 4 year old wants to play at the playground now. She picked it up through YouTube shorts and Roblox. Doesn’t really know it outside of the context of being a creepy doll from the internet.

I was surprised my 12 yr old nephew knows the show’s concept through Roblox and Mr. Beast but has never watched it. We tried to watch the show recently but he got bored halfway through the first episode and quit. It’s concerning how his generation’s attention span is so low.

My 7 year old, was 6 at the time I think, got it from YouTube and Roblox. He thought the "girl" from red light green light was "squid". This was when we stopped him playing Roblox, there's just too much weird shit on there and it's hard to monitor what's safe and not.
