I think there are two things going on here, Starmer's 'Talk' is that he shouldn't have to choose between the EU and the US, but his 'Walk', is that his Ministers repeat, ad nauseum, that we will NOT rejoin the SM, CU, or return our Freedom of Movement, - which is, apart from anything

Is clear that Trump doesn’t like large trading blocks like China, EU. He dreads the thought of South America becoming a block or joining BRIC (Brazil-India-China). UK is looking isolated and better join democratic EU than US under Trump

Even without Trump in power the mere fact that he has been and someone similar could be in the future shows the US is unreliable as a partner, ally or even friend. The EU is a lot more stable and rational.
