Kirby knows the piece needs some blacks in that area, but he also knows that it doesn't matter what they are. A shadow is a shadow, put something in and move on.

Abstract or organic backgrounds, where things didn't need to look the same from panel to panel (or be drawn from reference) help make the pages go by quickly. And there are issues of THOR and FF, here and there, that have almost no backgrounds that aren't weird machinescapes, rocks or gnarled trees.

I figure when he knew that he needed to catch up on deadlines, he'd do a story or two that worked that way. Still looked great, and got done in time.

Another advantage to him plotting the stories mostly solo.

You've probably already seen this, in but in Mark Evanier's "Kirby - King of Comics" book, there's a 6-or-8 page Kirby (autobiographical?) story about being a kid in Brooklyn, which is drawn in pencil and is absolutely amazing. Honestly my favorite Kirby comic.

They misspelled "ambition" as "decline", surely. Seems very much in line with how Kirby operated over decades: "autobio comics are a market trend, I can do that". And then doing THAT, because he had all that fascinating hinterland to draw upon.
