Just an FYI and a reminder. Alt Text isn't like a caption. It is for visually impaired people. A "screen reader" reads the alt text to them, so it should be descriptive text.
If it's a verbal meme, you should enter the text of the meme. If it's a visual joke, you should explain the joke.

Trying to follow everyone back, but the follow back bot is a bit slow.
Thanks for this 😊
Being hearing impaired, I depend on CC to help me understand exactly what's being said. I don't mind doing this for my visually impaired friends! I describe pictures to be descriptive and/or informative. Quotes are quoted.
Do they try to read them as a word (which is what I assume) or do they "get it".
Like would it read TTRPG as "titeerpig" or something weird
Should I avoid them entirely?
I don't think I care, though, if it's good for more than the intended target.
(my pinned post has more info & links for those unfamiliar with alt text)

Your analogy is perfect. I often tell people to describe the image as if you're on the telephone to a friend.
I hope your day continues to be great. 😸
