They like to say they believe in meritocracy, but only in one where they don't have to compete. DEI expands the pool so the "best person" can get the job.

You can’t just hire all your white buddies if the government forces you to hire women and people of color just because they’re also (or even, more so) qualified.

That IS meritocracy to them. They believe in their bones that the natural hierarchy of America is "straight white men run everything because divine-right-of-social-status" and everyone else is downstream and expendible.
