We had to learn the Latin genus and species name of every mammal when I took Mammalogy in grad school. Then Red Fox was Vulpes fulva. My lab partner decided to change it to Herpes vulva. I have never gotten Russ’s new name out of my memory!

I cannot imagine why! Fulva is the American subspecies of Vulpes vulpes, so when it was realised that the American Red Fox was conspecific with V. vulpes, albeit after a very lengthy isolation, Vulpes vulpes fulva was adopted! Arctophila fulva used to refer to a hoverfly - and to an Arctic moss!

One of the 2022 litter (unrelated to the present family group) has also been around, although she will be seen off if they notice her! This year's family has begun to disperse now - necessary to prevent in-breeding and to broaden the gene pool. Their short life-spans contribute to this too.
