No corporation is perfect and you can't buy everything from local vendors (and some of those local vendors have horrifying politics: see the farmers' market) so I've been focusing on buying from stores with unions.

Our NYT games sub ends in April (it's been an annual bday gift for J since they put their crosswords archives online) and we aren't renewing. I mostly do them out of habit; my faves are all the quordle and octordle ones on Merriam Webster (and other games they have).

We’ve cancelled our Prime, which I used a lot, along with their TV channels. It gave me great satisfaction to give the reason for the cancellation as, “I can’t buy from a company that shut down all operations in Quebec because one warehouse decided to unionize. I support workers’ rights.”

My husband still has his Audible account, which he’s had for about 20 years. He’s looking for a good alternative. He’s unhappy with the Amazon takeover, because they lost his entire library.

Last year, they switched his account from a US one to a Canadian one, and whoever did it forgot to toggle a switch or something. His entire library disappeared. He has spent hours on the phone trying to get it back. They can see his old account. But they can’t transfer his hundreds of books.

He’s pretty mad about it. It was their fuck-up, and he’s been a loyal client for 20 years.

He says their customer service was great before Amazon bought them. He relies on Audible because he’s visually impaired, but he’s rethinking his membership.
