Unsolicited advice I know; but on a bike of this era, this is a poor idea and it probably won't have mounts for them anyway.

Was gonna say the same. Without mounts would be looking a new fork for front. Also for rear assuming you could somehow mount them probably not enough clearance to do so.

Oh yeah I'd been through all of that with the bike shop in town, bit of engineering to be done, but not eye watering prices TBF

No, but spoke to the bike shop about some surgery & a full restoration (paint job etc, not eye watering costs).

I figure I love the bike, I know how it feels under me, I'm not a technical mountain biker, it takes panniers & is comfy as all heck on long open road rides with tyres changed, so why get a new bike when some bringing it into the 21st C works.

(says the guy who put 400K on his Subaru, lol)
