Basically later writers realized the unfortunate implications of the spotlight issue, and retconned Arcee as trans and Jhiaxus as simply a bad doctor manipulating her genuine desire. This was from the John Barber Optimus Prime series. Over in Lost Light, trans female TFs were fairly common.

It’s definitely bittersweet! Arcee was planning to sacrifice herself since she’s way older than Prime, Unicron was kinda sorta lowkey her fault, and most of her friends/family were already gone. But Prime saw that she had that future.
