The Assad regime is horrific but the Syrian Sunni rebels are not Jeffersonian democrats. Any decent people died or fled into exile long ago. An HTS regime would be almost as bad as an Assad, but likely replacing Iranian influence with ISIS. Not sure which is worse.

You are assuming that they have the power to take control of Syria, which they likely do not. They may succeed in time but it is far from certain and other resistance groups will oppose them. Taking actual control is far harder than just destroying the control of the current government.

💯 agree, and were the Sunni rebels to get rid of Alawi regime, highly likely it would degenerate into an intra-Sunni fight for power. My point is Sunni forces at this point are pretty extremist. Maybe 10 years ago there was a "moderate" opposition West could work with, not sure that's true now.

Yup, intra fighting could turn really ugly, even before a win, if the government is certain to go down. It seems the SDF has shifted gear and is advancing as well, the government forces seem to be heading into a complete collapse. The Kurds also seem to be stirring now.

The rebels in Aleppo include a large faction controlled and armed by Turkey.

It’s actually more akin to the Wagner Little Green Men re hybrid warfare Russian proxies who invaded Crimea in 2014.

Another example of the fragility of russian advances. May it be a microcosm of a much bigger collapse in the near future. Donetsk back in Ukraine within 8 years seems plausible to me.

Ukraine will recover it's territory as soon as Erdoğan decides to take part of the territory lost to Russia decades ago and Xi Jinping takes back the major port city of Vladivostok and the surrounding peninsula. Russia will not get involved in a war with Turkey and China. And then they're India.

Only Syria hasn't had all the support that Ukraine gets now. I hope this begins to give the Syrians a chance to rebuild and begin to have a decent life again. What's been done to them by their own disgusting leader is beyond belief

Unfortunately there’s not such a thing as the Syrians. Syria is a fractured State with factions divided by religion (Islam is composed of many sects), ethnicity and allegiance to external powers. I abhor Assad, but I worry about the Syrian Kurds, because the “rebels” are openly backed by Turkey.

The rebels in Syria have the support of Turkey.
Ukarainians have chosen the usa and the eu as their allies.
