I've got a friend who's been eligible for retirement benefits for two years and hasn't applied, because she thought she'd have to quit working full time. I informed her that she can work all she wants, and she should apply and will get a back payment. But getting in to apply will be the problem.

1) applying when 1st eligible is often a bad idea, unless you are dying, as benefit goes up ~8% per year you hold off
2) continuing to work means you could get taxed on SS, also credits for it might push reward for waiting > *5/yr
3) you don't get "back payments"

Just looked it up. On full retirement age, and you don't apply, you do get a back payment, but it's limited to six months according to the https://ssa.gov. If you put it off past that, your payment will go up, but only until you hit 70. She's not 70 yet, but getting close. Thanks for your feedback

Your original words were misleading, implying she was 64 & not yet FRA, so could not get "back payments."

Everything I said is still true though, and I will add that it would still probably be unwise to ask for backpayments, even if she can. That will permanently reduce all payments by about 4%

I was rather vague. My fault. She's at least a couple years past FRA. Thanks again for your feedback. and I will pass this on to her. Back to my original point though, if she does choose to apply now, she's screwed in terms of getting to see someone, and online is no longer an option.

My mother passed away in July 2024. I dreaded calling SSA to report, thinking I'd be on hold for 2 hours. Really about 20 min. Biden was president. Things were working fine, IMO. Musk's DOGE Bros are lying about SSA incompetence. They stopped her checks but left mine alone even w/ same name/address.
