Vance might be the most despicable of them all. Because his immorality and lying is so purely calculated, whereas for Trump and Musk, at least some of it is excused by careless stupidity
1) Nazi mega donor Peter Thiel has tried to buy Greenland many times. They want to build a lawless freedom city on Greenland.
2) Musks maternal grandfather was deeply involved with the nazi technocracy movement that wanted to expand America.

"Much effort is spent trying to extract a doctrine from all this. But there is none."
No. The "doctrine" is that we are now allied with Putin's Russia, and our entire foreign policy is being retooled accordingly. Seen in that light it all makes perfect sense.
The weird thing about this imperialist propaganda is it's not meant to convince anyone. Everybody knows the US annexing Greenland or Canada would have universally regarded as a joke a few months ago. So everyone repeating the line now is either consciously lying or has a very fluid sense of reality.
BLOG: Fascism and Nationalism have come full circle. We are now staring the consequences in the face - big economic negatives, scapegoating, and bullying on a national scale. And it will get worse.
Thank you, Anne Applebaum, for sharing this. Prof. Snyder is 100% right in his surgical analysis of the arrogant posturing of the destructive pro-Russian Trump/Vance White House.
Today, Greenlanders are likely even more aware of the benefits of being European.
A president musing about invading allies and breaking term limits isn’t leadership—it’s lunacy. Power without restraint isn’t strength, it’s danger. This isn’t a joke. It’s a warning shot. The Constitution doesn’t bend for ego.
Greenland have very favourable mining terms so US or other companies can enter anytime but so far none have considered any mineral resources economic. This is not about minerals it is only about Trump’s ego.
Never thought of Greenland as a destination. Trump might of given Greenland a tourism industry by mistake. Check out some pics online. Parts of the year and in certain areas the climate can be nice too. Thanks for your reply. Have a great day.
This is Kim Jong Un screaming at his subordinates in Pyongyang ...
ooops, sorry, wrong image, this is J D Vance talking bullshit at the Pituffik military base in Greenland.
Talking about imperialism, this is from todays demonstration at the US Embassy in Copenhagen.
Basicly it tells the triad from hell, Trump/Musk/Vance, to go to hell, and stop harrassing Greenland and Denmark.

"Musk-Trump are creating the bloodily moronic situation in which the United States will have to fight wars to get the things that, just a few weeks ago, were there for the asking."
The news of departure of Yale professors to Toronto, including Timothy Snyder - made my day very dark. Especially losing him, it feel like we lost the guiding North Star. But, we need to preserve those brains and we don’t want them to be snatched on the street, so I understand, but profoundly sad.
That… is the thing I’m feeling very doomed. If this is not “in advance”, we are already knee deep in there. And I bet that he was also threatened (and his family too).
Just read: “Snyder’s press secretary stressed that his move to the University of Toronto was primarily for personal reasons, the decision was made before the US presidential election.”
I can’t say what I would do in his shoes, but if I wrote a book urging people to not obey in advance, I’d feel obligated to stay and fight. It’s his international students who are more into danger. Many anti-authoritarian profs are staying and fighting back.
Snyder's hardly 'obeying in advance'!! Yale capitulates to Trump's strong-arming just as Snyder is vocally urging universities & other institutions to stand together to resist the push. If he stays there his work is compromised; he literally won't be able to say things he needs to say. 1/2
And he'll be in a compromised position vis à vis appearing to endorse Yale's cowardice. In order to be able to work at all, he must be free to work honestly. It's not 'in advance'; it's 'in response'. There's a line in the sand and Yale went past it. 2/2
I'm glad he is leaving. As outspoken as he has been & critical of this Regime- he is going to eventually be a prime target. Fighting a defamation lawsuit would take up so much of his time& energy. We need his thoughts & ideas. Being in Toronto he will free to say whatever he wants to without fear.
If they really want to go after him they will. They will say since he’s a US citizen he doesn’t get special protection by living cross the border, or some other BS. I wish he’d have stayed and fought them here.
Someone posted that Snyder said he made the decision before the election & that it was for purely personal reasons. Jason Stanley, also at Yale & leaving says because he is Jewish, and he has 2 black/Jewish sons who he fears for especially under this Regime. We need their knowledge and insights!
The majority of professors are not leaving. The ones going flatter themselves by thinking they are the only ones at risk. Or their work is so important they need to be academic refugees. What they are doing is leaving their students in the dust.
he shapes the minds of new generations of leaders through his work. if he expects to not be able to continue that, his choice is to have a momentary impact at the time of his arrest or to have ongoing impact through teaching and research elsewhere, in a place not requesting his compliance.
This is hopefully unlikely, but I fear that Timothy Snyder might find himself detained at the border when entering the US from Canada. "We're aware of your social media terrorism, Mr. Snyder."
He warned you for 10 years. You don't realize, perhaps, how late it is. Americans voted in Trump and over half the country is obeying in advance. You don't need him to fight for you, it's time for you to fight for yourselves.
I realized it in 2015. I campaigned against him each of the past three elections. I’m not the problem. But it’s true. If trump wants to invade Canada, nothing will stop him.
Nobody is coming to save us, we have to do it ourselves. Prof. Snyder must save his voice, it is very important, and with Nazi Barbie at the head of DOJ, I believe Snyder did the right thing. Have you seen how that bitch is attacking judges?
I just read that Snyder himself says the decision to head to Toronto was made last year before the election, for personal reasons. So apparently it’s not in response to bondi or kash.
He waited till the right strategic moment. His personal reasons might include his wife being a Jewish Holocaust historian. He just wrote that excoriating Substack piece about the antisemitic Trump regime's mendacity calling eg Columbia 'antisemitic'. And he has a kid. He's not 'obeying in advance'.
Brilliant. But Tim missed one important bit — there was a perverse logic to the idea that “Greenland is being threatened, therefore it needs the US,” since the US is the only country actively threatening it!
This is excellent. JD Vance and his wife are beneath contempt. And DOGE should look into how much money was wasted sending them on a three-hour tour to insult people.
@timothysnyder.bsky.social really cuts to the chase in his substack piece on Denmark and Greenland. Is the whole point of the ‘artificial crisis’ (useful phrase in understanding Trumpism) to benefit Russia in the end?
It’s quite absurd to hear Vance talk about how badly Denmark has treated Greenland. On this list, only one territory isn’t a U.S. territory, and it’s the same one where people have access to free healthcare and education. It really is quite simple - Vance has no cards to play on in this discussion.
You guys over-analyze these wickedly stupid cretins. Why Greenland? It's compensation for being "outed" for having the world's tiniest mushroom shaped dick. You guys blast MAGA for "compensating" with big lifted pickup trucks. Trump views Greenland as salve for his unusually tiny dick and hands.
Excellent piece. I would suggest including rankings in the EIU’s Democracy Index (Denmark in top ten and a “full democracy”, US 28th and a “flawed democracy “.
I feel a sense of profound loss that Prof Snyder has gone to teach in Canada. I am happy that he is safe, but know what it meant for him to physically leave.
"Musk-Trump inherited a state with unprecedented power and functionality, and are taking it apart. They also inherited a set of alliances and relationships that underpinned the largest economy in world history. This too they are breaking"
Of course, it is pretty good I’m sure. I was just taking issue pedantically with the idea of unprecedented functionality. Or perhaps they meant unprecedented in the U.S. compared to the past.
I'm sure they meant it that way. Your point is important though: there are plenty of places where government is more functional and the US should not be satisfied with incremental improvements
My glimmer of hope: that the American society has been used to their freedom rights for generations, and that based on this, they‘ll fight back harder than other nations did in comparable circumstances. 🍀🍀🍀 _once they’ve woken up, that is…_
They are two resentful, angry, childish and (possibly) drug-addled crybabies who didn’t get enough praise in their childhoods, mostly because they are mediocre at best. And they know it.
Such damaged people are doing such damage. I can’t recall an Administration with so many unaddressed mental health challenges. The resulting damage is incalculable and will last for decades.
Excellent work. That’s the point eh? Vladimir’s support of this insane Greenland Republican project gives the game away. +President Musk visits the CIA on Monday. ++This Republican crew is also tasked with crafting a diversion to cover the invasion of the ROC too.
A single explanation for everything Trump and musk are doing is that Trump is a Russian asset or an agent. Why else tried to destroy the United States?.
If you have an alternative explanation that counts for everything, please put it down here.
Excellent piece. Thank you. I think Denmark should take over America. They rank second in world happiness. We rank 24th, now, but that ranking is going to drop precipitously very quickly.
I don't think we Danes can afford the massive US foreign debt, as we have none ourselves. Also your creditors would worry us, going forward with such a deal 😎 - china being the biggest creditor.
Thanks for sharing @anneapplebaum.bsky.social
We Danes are actually rather much in shock after having been one of the closest allies of the US.
Thx for setting some facts straight in the era of post-factualism
Greenland is a part of the danish kingdom. They are not going anywhere for the next many years. And they can’t kick the Americans out, unless it is decided in Denmark
“Musk-Trump are creating the bloodily moronic situation in which the United States will have to fight wars to get the things that, just a few weeks ago, were there for the asking. And of course wars rarely turn out the way one expects.”

Btw, in DK, students are actually paid to study. They can borrow extra at a favourable rate. They can work to earn as well (up to a limit, before the "free lunch" is reduced ;-) )
As Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of DK, same rights.
This article clearly describes this pseudo-colonial acquisition, not only by #47, but also by his cabinet, cronies and supporters. The visit by the VP to Greenland was designed to salvage the administrations image. The people of Greenland don't support it as they seek their path to independence.
The thing that irks me is that so much of this imperialist coverage is through a US lens. The mendacity, the arrogance, the provincialism to think of sovereign nations as merely objects to be possessed. Like that would even happen. Stop it already.
"Denmark was a founding member of NATO, and it is already American’s job to defend Denmark and Greenland, just as it is Denmark’s job (as with other members) to defend the United States."
Can’t we work *with* Greenland, and forge a partnership? One that would provide more security for Greenland, reaffirm its sovereignty, and increase co-operation and economic opportunities? It can be a win-win. Let’s try that.
Wresting control of Greenland from Denmark and absorbing Canada as the 51st state only makes sense in context of pulling out of NATO and aligning with Russia. At that point no country in the Western Hemisphere would have an obligation to an attacked Europe.
Everything that DJT-Vance-Musk do help Russia & hurt our NATO allies & UKR.
This reality seems missed by millions of Americans who convinced themselves egg prices were too high & cats/dogs were being eaten in Ohio by immigrant residents.
Wondering when/if Americans will finally understand reality?
As I was listening to Vance speak, I realized there's very little between what russia is doing to Ukraine, and what the us is attempting to do to Greenland. These guys are into fiefdom building at the expense of the mental serfs. #resist #resistance
As I'm increasingly coming to realize, it's because after almost a century of relative peace and prosperity, politicians of today mostly don't really stand for anything beyond pleasing their perceived base, staying in power and keeping their benefits.
Quite surprised Snyder doesn't refer to how 1st Nations have been treated by the US as it is v telling that Vance is either unaware of this or so patronising that he thinks Greenlanders aren't aware..
The article is very good. My only concern is that it doesn't address what seems a very likely explanation for this ridiculous effort: that for Trump it functions as an easy way to test his advisors and assistants, distinguishing those who will do anything he tells them, from those who have limits.
Musk-Trump are creating the bloodily moronic situation in which the United States will have to fight wars to get the things that, just a few weeks ago, were there for the asking. And of course wars rarely turn out the way one expects.
Trump is prevented by law from leaving NATO. An invasion of Greenland is a violation of NATO’s article 8, which would push NATO to eject the US as an aggressor.
Maybe this is all a back door way out of NATO, naked imperialism, and a way to do Putin’s bidding.
Trump won’t get public support to take over Greenland by force. The public & most of the GOP still thinks Trump won’t do it. They will react forcefully when Trump makes his move.
World War III is NOT what Americans want.
The Military Industrial sector might love it (they make billions), average Americans just want PEACE and a LIVING WAGE.

This is missing the context of the Praxis “network state” investors who are the ones who need Greenland for the e land for their new independent country. Thiel and Andreessen are pulling the strings here. Without this context, this makes no sense.
TY for gift article! These two lines lay Trump Greenland security lies bare:
___
"There are only a couple hundred Americans at Pituffik where once there were ten thousand; there is only that one US base on the island where once there were a dozen; but that is American policy, not Denmark’s fault."
If the USA occupies Greenland... well, Norway has a drama called Occupied, based on a Russian occupation, so it is not as if this sort of thing hasn't been thought about. There's a long history of anti-US sentiment in Europe, dating from the 1960s and 1970s, that won't take much to stir up again.
If that happened, then I would like to hope that 1. Canada imposes overflight restrictions, 2. European nations impose sanctions (closing Trump golf resorts in Britain, for example) and 3. things generally kick off with acts of vandalism etc against US embassies and consulates. 3. would happen.
"The United States has fallen well behind its allies and its rivals in the Arctic, in part because members of Vance’s political party denied for decades the reality of global warming, which has made it hard for the U.S. Navy to persuade Congress of the need to commission icebreakers. "
The imperialism isn't even trying to have clothes. They tell on themselves constantly and play some delusional game that might work on a used car lot.
Well written, Timothy Snyder.
I would like to hear from ALL the BIG players in the 🇺🇸 Mining Sector (There are none!) who are going to Invest Billions getting Precious Minerals out if the Permafrost in GREENLAND. That's how this 🇬🇱 Folly started. Whilst ALSO Investing in Mega Mines to extract Minerals in Ukraine.
