For one listing, rent jumped nearly 86% since September. In an interview with LAist, the agent said she told her client, “People are desperate, and you can probably get good money.” via @laist.com

I wish I could say this was shocking, but I can't. I wonder how many more acts like this it will take before the tipping point is reached and exceeded?
Should be, and probably is, illegal. This is classic disaster price gouging. At a minimum, this person should be publicly shamed. And their POS realtor.
Would you expect anything less from a society that does not give the “have nots” an equal opportunity to education as the “haves”. I’m from Maine the differences in education are glaringly obvious. I’m a have not, the only reason I’m educated is because I read to escape my abuser.
Apparently, it's part of the union contract that they have to live in LA County in order to get health insurance. Someone posted about that the other day.
If this is about the fires and availability, these pirates will be one of the reasons no one can afford insurance.
Ppl waiting for rebuild will often be able to charge a portion of the rent back to insurance company.
The owners won’t necessarily be paying the full price, so they’ll cough up 😞
Unfortunately disasters that destroy lots of housing will cause hikes in rents. I haven't checked rents in Asheville, North Carolina recently, but I bet they've skyrocketed because of hurricane Helene.
I'm not saying that's right. But it's inevitable without changes to the law.
My husband and I drove across thevUS from the west coast a decade ago. We stopped in Asheville for two nighta, and ended up spending five -- it is a truly stunning place! I've lived along the west c9ast since college, so I have high standards for "stunning". ;)
California law already prohibits price gouging on residential rentals in these circumstances, and the CA AG and LA DA have promised to vigorously prosecute offenders. The state hasn’t gotten to these landlords yet because LA is still navigating a natural disaster.
Honestly one of the shooters greatest gifts to the working class is having the same name as a beloved character. It makes it infinitely easier to propogate anti upper class sentiment with plausable deniability.
Egregious price gouging like this, when obvious and documented, should be penalized by seizure of the home for the immediate housing of those most in need.
“Govts/politicians, mining corps and their shareholders, who supercharged climate denialism of climate change, deliberately wielding climate chaos and global instability, putting profits over responsibility, are all responsible and complicit for the destruction of the planet.”
Imagine what kind of person you need to be that you just saw a bunch of people lose their whole lives and your first thought is how you can make an extra buck
I can hear them now trying to justify to anyone who cares what they think. “The market dictates it and the demands is there. And somebody else was going to do it, why shouldn’t I?” These people are impossible
Violations of the price gouging statute are subject to criminal prosecution that can result in one-year imprisonment in county jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Violations are also subject to civil penalties of up to $2,500 per violation, injunctive relief and mandatory restitution.
Call the listing agent, Fiora Aston, act like an interested client with money, set up an appointment and don't show up. When she calls you to see if you're running late, tell her you deliberately wasted her time because she's a parasite.
We can coexist with monsters. They don't need to be killed. They need to be contained, regulated, and subjected to rules. Greed is like an addiction that must be managed.
I don't even have that problem here in Texas, but I think I might actually start doing that to make a fccking point. Those parasites have really got it coming to them.

Make "good money" off "desperate people"
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
Greed is now a sickness.

For anyone, to say; Californians deserve this, Democrats should burn, too bad, who cares, have we really sunk this low?
this is now our future 😢

Report landlords to the California AG.
These slum lords are so evil. May they rot forever 🙏
This is why corporations shouldnt have the same rights as people. They’re more like monsters than people.

....and through him, WE have come to claim our due.
Landlords doubled the rent.
Landlords extorted their tentants.
Landlords exploited the catastrophe.
'Rents' don't have agency and it's propagandistic to report on disaster capitalism as though it were just a law of physics.
Price gouging is price gouging and it’s wrong, but come tf on, how about investigating what landlords are doing to the lower/middle class??
