President Trump isn't the first politician to call for the end of the penny — but getting rid of it may not be easy. The value of the 1-cent coin has been debated for decades.

This is very important news. Who cares about the lives and liberty of real human beings... we have to save the penny from extinction!!!!111!1!1!1!!111!!!!!1!
If he does, anything with pennies on the end will be rounded up and the business will have to pay that to the Feds (aka, his private coffers) as some sort of fee. Leon Skum will "fix" all registers to do that.
Considering three provinces are actively stripping it down to cause failure/force privatization,I wouldn’t get too big on a high horse until y’all get those idiots out of office, tbh…just left after 6 yrs in Sask and genuinely worried for the ppl there and I say that as someone raised in Mississippi
He did this to give Philadelphia the finger for beating Chiefs. I remember taking my 5th grade students to the mint where the Pennie’s are made. He continues to be such a baby.
Keep the penny. For all the reasons in this article. Plus, I love pennies. And I pay cash, which more people should do if you're worried about saving money and having your money go further.
Look, I hate Trump with a fucking passion, but this should have been done 10 years ago or longer. No one, and I mean NO ONE is going to miss the two cents that a rounding might cost them (and even then it would only be for cash transactions). Is this a distraction, 100% but it still should be done.
No, prices would be to the cent for all card, phone tap, or online payments. The rounding only occurs for cash payments up and down to the nearest nickel price. $1.22 would be $1.20 etc. the concept of a cent wouldn’t disappear just bc the penny is gone
Canada got rid of pennies more than a decade ago, and we don't miss them. There was the obligatory protest at the beginning, and it turned out to be mostly sentimentality.
It was costing more than a penny per penny to produce them, and copper is worth more than that on the market now. DO it.
I mean, we could mandate all prices include taxes so we don't even have to worry about change beyond maybe dimes, quarters, and half dollars but that would be probably be considered an extreme liberal idea
In my opinion the penny is not worth loosing money to make. But the biggest argument is why is he focusing on this and not more important things. Like the cost of groceries or cost of utilities. Focus on what can be done for that.
As an Oregon resident again, I don't have to deal with sales tax (after 45 years in Illinois) so nickel based pricing would work fine. But what happens with sales tax jurisdictions? Some states have state, county, & local taxing. I predict a mess.
It’s my belief he doesn’t do anything on a whim, there must be a victim somewhere. What is the largest company that is defying DEI mandates, that regularly uses the penny in its pricing. COSTCO. https://www.foodandwine.com/costco-price-tag-meaning-8718486
None of it's worth anything. Humans created time to quantify infinity and they created money to quantify greed. It's worth whatever we do or don't assign to it.
Canada removed the penny coin in 2013. Cash transactions are rounded to the nearest 5 cents (we still have the nickle). Electronic transactions are still to the cent. We also have $1
(1987) and $2 (1996) coins and our bank notes are polymer (2011).
Except for playing ramoli, I haven't seen one in Canada for a long time. For cash, you round to the nearest $.05. For debit/credit, it's exact. It didn't take long to get used to the switch.
This might be the only time I agree with Trump. That said, I do wonder what his true motivations are. Certainly not to actually help taxpayers.
What is comical though is that the last time there was a concerted effort to do the same thing, conservatives lost their minds. Remembering like Jan 6.
Obama tried to get rid of the penny and Repubs called him un-American and stated it would ruin small businesses (ignoring Canada hasn’t had a penny in around a decade and the process was super smooth) but it actually is a great example of spending waste.
Get rid of the penny, nickle, 1 dollar bill and 5 dollar bill. Keep the dime and dollar coin, add a half dollar and a 5 dollar coin. Round everything to tenth of a dollar. Include all taxes and fees in the advertised price. Done.
This is the least of America’s problems right now.
There is a constitutional crisis going on where the Executive Branch is unconstitutionally not fulfilling its duties to execute the laws passed by Congress.
In 2018 I noticed something. The new Pennie’s looked different and felt lighter than the old ones. My first thought was that Trump and Mnuchin were ripping us off.
We know Americans have been in the neighborhood when we see pennies. No one here wants them except the Science teachers, who use them to make potato batteries.
Worked retail in Canada for a few years and you hardly notice it’s gone! Most ppl pay with card or phone tap now so prices are still by the cent and the rounding for cash was rare!
No pennies will complicate cash transactions because of the constant need of rounding tranasctions.
Better to get rid of the $1 bill and use the coin instead, like all other countries. The cost of replacing paper bills every 18 months far exceeds the cost of replacing a coin every 35 years.
You round up or round down. Multiple countries do this and it level out- but also only done with cash. Online, phone tap, and card payment are still to the cent!
Yes that’s what I think. I guess Canada and Australia did it and it didn’t always go up but … here it’s so petty doesn’t seem like business would choose to round down.
Impossible. Unless we completely restructure our currency system, what would they be replaced with? Since all coins are entirely base metals, maybe it's time to just make pennies out of pure zinc, again. We did it once before: 1943-44.
Trump just a figurehead. They're only giving him morsels to chew on that aren't in any way related to broad policy. Trump's role is as a punching bag for the left and a voice for the idiots. Shift your focus to the real levers of power, Thiel and Jarvis. Pull them out of the shadows.

I want to know why they are picking on the penny? It doesn't have to be coated in copper, does it?

What Will trump say today to distract from his failing Administration?
Trump should be dropped as well.

Do businesses want to lose 4 cents on a sale for our convenience?
I never see anyone mention it!
THAT closed the door and made me decide I would never go back to the US until the MAGA idiots are defeated.

Believe it or not, it does work.
Canada has being doing it for more than ten years, now, and we're all good.
In fact, we're SO good, your orange hoodlum keeps trying to steal us. 🤩
