Most Americans frequently use federal science information. But few are concerned that cuts to federal science spending could affect their access to such information, a new poll finds.

Republicans have spent decades dumbing down the people and giving power to their big donors whil. Democrats take advantage too and refuse to even vote a block of no. Pathetic.
Resisters peacefully protest 6/14 at bases contributing (with our military assets) to this farcical action perpetrated by the orange plague. Make DC a ghost town by protesting only in cities surrounding DC and every city across the country 6/13-15! https://Indivisible.orghttps://generalstrikeus.com https://FiftyFifty.one
If Idiocracy was a documentary, this would be the part where they proudly announce cutting science budgets while launching a new dating show for influencers.
Because they don't know how to read beyond a 6th grade level? The red stares have destroyed public education, and now we're all worse off because of it where people don't think the federal government does anything they ever use 🤬
I think the number may be less than you believe. I look at the numbers in the recent protests and posit many others couldn't participate due to work, medical issues, transportation issues, locality, etc. Then factor in many of the Rebublicans, and the few MAGAs that are unhappy with Trump.
All of that requires thought and displays concern. As far as ignorance goes, Trump love the uneducated and will go to great lengths to avoid transparency that would inform us as to his TRUE agendas. Ignorance isn't cool, but there are those that prefer it in the masses.
It just means a return to the "good old days" of weather prediction and healthcare that the medieval peasants enjoyed. Remember, dying in your forties places a lot less strain on government resources. 👍
I don't recognize this country. We are spending money on going to the Moon and Mars but not on more practical science. No logic, just fearing and loathing!
Please get on the phone or e-mail and tell you reps in DC to support funding for NPR/PBS. It only takes a few minutes and it doesn't cost any money. We don't need money in politics. We just need people to participate. https://www.nationalfinancialplan.co
I feel like this is an incredibly low estimate. The weather app on your phone is directly sourced from data that is ONLY available from federal sources. People use it multiple times a day. Google Maps uses a lot of federal data to function. That's a daily for some. I'm sure there's more I'm missing.
American taxpayer dollars pay for weather and climate research. Companies profit off the results. American taxpayer dollars pay for pharmaceutical research. Companies profit off the results. We have socialized science and privatized the benefits.
Worked in public school classroom for 10 years before retirement…can’t agree with you more. For too many “students”school is a giant day care teaching kids to be ill-informed consumers.
It’s fitting that the US is now going through the same brain drain as the one we inflicted on East Germany to hurt its economy and take advantage of the education we wouldn’t have to spend money on. We could let them educate the scientists, engineers, etc. and then we could reap the benefits.
I get that I work in government finance and should know more than most about how it functions. It still deeply bothers and worries me how few Americans even understand the basics of how government is funded/functions. If people realized that funding impacts EVERY area of their life they might care.
We are going to be in the dark about a lot of things. This is by design. The idea that the private sector will take up the slack is laughable. They are not interested in giving out free information.
People have gotten so used to having free access to information they seem to think it just appears out of thin air. If you're not paying a direct fee, it's being paid for some other way. Maybe through taxes, philanthropy, data collection. Nothing worth having is free of all cost!
Actually, they use it on a daily basis. They just don’t know it. That internet you’re using-federally funded research built that. The news/media have a job to inform and educate the public. NPR is better than most, but most want to fuel celebrity obsession and get the highest ratings over all else.
So people have a disconnect on how government is essential to their daily lives. If only media outlets didn’t platform and amplify right wing lies through clickbaity or sane washing headlines and articles. 🤔
Here are headlines from NPR that downplays the administration. The last one seems to amplifying opinion.
“Free speech is shifting under Trump. We're exploring how: NPR”
“Trump is back and ready to change America”
“Trump restricts funding for 'gain-of-function' research — calling it dangerous“
Ya’ll, at this point I think we should not really say Trump. Trump is honestly just golfing, watching tv and tweeting. We need to say The GOP is doing this. Because- they have a choice to stop Trump - but they don’t.
It seems like they just report on how people feel and think about everything, not what’s actually happening. They think weather apps predict hurricanes, so they feel fine about scientists being treated like trash. They report the polls, not the reality.
The underlying thinking being that many do not seem think this regime is dismantling anything that facilitates people/businesses find their own answers.
"Science" is a threat to those who don't want facts to rule decision-making.
Interesting insight. It's almost like we enjoy the fruits of the tree but don't worry about the roots. It's important to remember that continued access to quality information often depends on sustained funding.
I'm starting to think these "polls" always sample the same echo chamber of people who thought a twice impeached, 34x convicted criminal, rapist was a decent choice for POTUS
Glib stupid magats take everything for granted. Bellow - 'burn it all down' - mostly because they're bored. Then cry and wail when reality finally hits them in the nose. Worst social class in human history.
Whenever I see someone say "who needs NOAA, I've got the weather on my phone" I die a little inside. Americans are not #1 at much these days but we do seem to be leading when it comes to willful ignorance.
Please stop 🤚 Wait a minute I'm Shadi I live in Gaza 🇵🇸💔 My family eats spoiled flour and dry bread. A bag of flour costs $200 😔 There is no food and I'm dying every day and every minute 😭 We need you in every sense of the word
The arrogance! It's so embarrassing to see Americans peacock like we're the only country worth anything, especially since you don't have to spend much time traveling or learning about the world to see how untrue that is. I'm guessing a lot of people are ready for us to get our comeuppance here.
Many of us have truly become pathetic. 1/3 voted for the criminal, and another third didn't bother to vote. So it was only 1/3 of us who actually stepped up and tried to stop this utter disaster.
Why do Republicans think they can force extreme libertarianism on Americans? This bullshit is popular in billionaire-funded think tanks but normal people like knowing when a hurricane is coming or not worrying about their kids dying from bad meat.
it is by design, a less educated populous is easier to control and are less likely to know how badly they are being screwed over. never forget that for you and i it is the ayn rynd wet dream BUT for the wealthy it is full blown communism so they get ALL the money.
This response is very unscientific, but: The polling data has to be off. Perhaps the question was wrong? Or maybe most of the people in this country have lost their minds through lack of education, an overuse of social media, and excessive substance abuse. The crazies have taken over.
Please stop 🤚 Wait a minute I'm Shadi I live in Gaza 🇵🇸💔 My family eats spoiled flour and dry bread. A bag of flour costs $200 😔 There is no food and I'm dying every day and every minute 😭 We need you in every sense of the word
Sorry, but we are not a well educated society! Just heard a Fox host say that the Fifth Amendment doesn't mention "illegal immigrants". Really, you mean in the Eighteenth Century, when everyone was an immigrant, failed to mention "illegal immigrants"? These are some of the stupidest people alive.
The Transportation Secretary was asked by a Fox host who the celebrity was flying in the Blackhawk that forced two jetliners to have to alter their course, and his response was that he didn't know. The Fox host said: "Who are we supposed to ask? You're the Secretary of Transportation? Hilarious!
As a vegetable farmer I rely on accurate and timely weather forecasting and NOAA radar daily. In the past few years forecasting has become extremely accurate. It's an invaluable tool. I'm sure the DOGE boys want to monetize it.
Criminals . 🌞☔🌪️
Things will only change when NOAA fails to warn of impending severe thunderstorms, and Trump gets hit by lightning on the golf course.
One can only hope.
Of course, because many Americans are, quite bluntly, fucking idiots who imagine this vital information will just continue to appear out of thin air or, equally stupid, refuse to believe they use anything whose source is the Federal government.
My concern isn’t my use of their products, but the fact that they work hand in hand with FAA, NTSB and other agencies to fulfill their missions. Esp FAA- that big ole weather plane is indispensable for keeping us all safe during hurricane season.
1/2: This post exemplifies the problem we have in today's divided America. People use this information not knowing its source. They hear about budget cuts because our government is "bloated," but don't look at the details of what's being cut. This post refers to many sources for further detail.
2/2: Trump and his Influencers have tapped into populist thinking, saying what many people already believe to be true, thus confirming their viewpoints, so no additional research on their part needed. Don't expect them to root around looking for details. They're "Low Information People".
But Trump hates science and scientists. He is totally ignorant about science. He is unfit to be in office. He needs to be impeached and removed from office for cutting off funding to NOAA and the National Weather Service.
The poll found that on a weekly basis more than 90% of people use information that is based on federal science. But only 10% of respondents are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to such information.
The American people are painfully stupid.
it might be something like they assume government waste exists, and no doubt it probably does somewhere, and then they assume there is a lot of it so that only waste is being cut. But that's not what's going on, it's a totally gutting of functionality.
They are ignorant about the ways our government helps them in daily life. They don’t connect the dots. Loss of the federal agencies will hurt citizens and they’re not aware yet what they are losing.
We don't even know what the Republicans are doing and attacking and where they're doing it unless someone tells us. Lack of concern is more like lack of knowledge of what they're doing to all of our institutions, piece by piece.
#Impeach the pos
News outlets could do a better job helping people connect the dots. Thank you for covering this. The President went on record saying he cares about jobs while cutting and causing forced retirement of thousands of federal workers doing jobs that require years of specialized training. Call this out.
Without science the republicans can do what ever they want . No one telling them the harm that they are doing. Because drill baby drill is more important then clean air water and anything else that can stop the money. Which is what they can eat when it’s all gone!
Most Americans are unaware that they frequently use federal science information. "I don't use the National Weather Service, I get the weather on the evening news."
Is the data trustworthy? There has been data corruption shown in both climate science and healthcare/CDC/NIH. Trust has been destroyed by the very people entrusted to provide the information.
With reduced funding and staff, NOAA/NWS won't be able to support current technology that helps keep us safe. All research that keeps our country a leader in climate, will be eliminated. When a severe storm hits and the usual warnings aren't made, lives will be lost and it's all Dumf's fault.
until the changes impact professional sports on TV or have a tangible presence (or absence) in a store, most Americans will go on blissfully ignorant of what is happening around them
Because most people don’t think about the underlying effort to produce stuff. It’s like people who say they hate paywalls for what used to be legitimate news outlets like WP/NYT and then wonder why their standards went downhill
Well…they’re in for a rude awakening. Why is my weather app so wrong? Why did this new drug make me sick? Why didn’t anyone warn us about that tsunami?
Because people are poorly informed. They don't want to know because people are lazy when everything works. When you start messing around with something that's not broken... People are going to find out and they are going to get mad when they start dying from storms and food that's not inspected
Like the people saying their weather app provides hurricane warnings. Where the f—- do they think the weather apps get their weather data? 😒 the plan to un-educate citizens in order to control everything and enrich themselves was a good one for the bad guys.
So many things being cut and slashed every day, hard to keep up. Americans are not concerned? I do not believe that is true. Many are looking for avenues to stop the dismantling, but all of our politicians are for it. We protest and contact politicians, and nothing is done about it.
The NIH is accessed by the Dietary Supplement Industry for Clinical Study reference on a daily basis by millions.
As the NIH is considered the most trusting source of science.
What do you expect from a country whose citizens don’t care about NOAA (the department that forecasts weather, among other things), because they’ll just “get their weather from their phone app”
Watching Elon Musk and his cronies dismantle your government, because ‘wAStE’ is 🤯
Excerpt: “The poll found that on a weekly basis more than 90% of people use weather forecasts, job market reports, food safety warnings … based on federal science. But only 10% of respondents are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to such information.” 🤦♂️
Because most don't realize or care to know that there is 'a science behind that'. They wander around just thinking it all comes to them magically, it is just there.... for them. Once it is gone, maybe they'll realize.
The potential lack of information terrifies me in many ways. Mostly for the fact of we're in the height of tornado season. There's millions of lives potentially at risk with weather access cuts. I don't live in Tornado Alley but I don't have to to not want someone to come to harm for lack of warning
Well I worked in healthcare and am still active, I live on a Huge bay and and we have an active fishing industry , dozens of small business from the lawn companies ,recycling in our area are dependent on Federal Science information. Waiting for the measles to arrive. How will we know. Love to cohort

I don’t think people will understand consequences until they experience them. Speaking for myself, don’t know what is funded and how I use it except to a limited extent.. weather, health, climate… but I am alarmed.
The federal bureaucracy had become such an efficient machine that conservatives believed their own lies and forgot how much it helps their constitutions

More and more this is sounding like Brexit was in the UK. What do you mean I can’t live in Spain for 6 months a year? yeah you fucked that up when you voted brexit. What do you mean they’re scaling back that infrastructure programme with all the jobs? yeah the EU paid for that.
We're such a shallow, petty, self-centered society in this country. The more people I talk to the more I'm convinced they are so clueless beyond their own small towns. I used to believe there were just pockets of ignorance but now I see...it's willful ignorance. Shocking.
I have nothing but contempt for the American electorate, the Republican party, and the press who has legitimized the reactionary right for decades through their "both sides" bullshit. Thanks for fucking over the rest of us.
Gives new meaning to the old phrase "get real." In the 70s, the cool kids wouldn't want to emulate Elon in any way 😎 He would have been a joke. Wtf has changed?
Since the firing of fed workers began, it was apparent many thought that had nothing to do with anything else...& I have been thinking of this monologue--because people really don't make connections...don't realize that Harvard not getting fed grants *will* impact their lives down the line...etc
Yeh. I think smart people think of long-term effects on future humans, because they know they could die any day, and the only thing that will go on is what they've created for others. Pretty elementary.
Science in every day life is a fact, not opinion to be polled. Tell people *how* science helps us every day. We don’t need to know what people may think (esp if it’s erroneous).
t's not the MEDIA!! It's the collapse of our intellectual curiosity. Schools can only do so much. Society as a whole has to make the larger world & how it works as important as the tech/celebrity/consumer appetite. Other countries value museums, zoos, nature, libraries..MORE than just a class trip.
It has always astounded me how few adults know basic things like history & poets, how to identify a tree or grow vegetables; take time to learn abt nature, take the family to a state park or see the Grand Canyon. They get sucked in by reality/shock tv & Disney. We're incurious, at best. Ignorant.
not quite, they were just stupid. they were not being malicious about it. THIS is maliciously calculated to cause harm all so a handful of people can make even more money.
Bizarre is the only word I'm able to wrap around the finding. We assume peeps using data are bright enough to grok that space. Yet, they tiptoe through the tulips toking drags on discarded diapers believing data will remain reliable & available. Even w/o cuts, trust is diminished because of DOGE. 🤦♂️
