Go back in time and tell a bunch of neo liberals like Kohl not to be so naive. When I visited the DMZ in Korea the locals said they won't be making the same mistake.

I dont have a solution but don't do it again. I advise zelensky that Crimea will be full of traitors unless they expelled

Wow. What’s the explanation?

That social change encounters pushback if too much occurs too fast?
That that old East has received to majority of migrants?
That people can easily fall back to old authoritarian ways?

Oh hell no. The places voting AfD generally have fewer migrants than average. There are loads of reasons for it - depopulation, migration (out), deindustrialisation, populist politicians playing into grievances.

Sure, but there must be some reason why the old East is proving a much more fertile ground to the AfD?

Surely it has to be routed in the differing experiences and expectations of the two regions?

One hypothesis might be that eastern gains in wealth so recent, they particularly fear losing them?

No it's not the last point. The perception is the east is still behind, and that breeds grievances - some legitimate, some not. And there is a looking down on the east in the west (that I hate, but in my own social circles is very real - when I tell people I am going to Görlitz they think I'm crazy)

I think it’s a bit like that for Wales though for many it’s just a pretty holiday place. German Govs though invested heavily in east Germany, right? Wrong kind of economics? Wrong kind of investment? Where did they go wrong? Ta.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Wales. There are some parallels, but many don’t hold. The inferiority complex in eastern Germany, and how the frustrations have played out, is darker and more serious than Wales I think.
