What would you argue is the point where the Roman Republic as we understood it died or was at least fatally wounded? Same for the Roman Empire in the west?
It may have some relevant answers for the United States.
For the Roman Empire in the West, trickier and fuzzier, because there are efforts to reassert central power relatively late. Maybe the death of Majorian in 461?
