I really wish this “bend the knee” framing would stop. They’re not acquiescing or being forced to comply. They’re putting themselves in a good position to maximize profits. These are billionaires and corporations; applying morality to their motives gives them way too much credit.

Neither Putin nor Orban has been good for business, nor has freedom of action improved for businesses. The competitive position of *some* businesses improved, and their owners are perhaps richer than they otherwise would be, at great cost to others.
Short-term profit is literally the only thing that matters to them.
