I was taught to read by my mother from a very young age and started school able to read. Reading has been a constant joy throughout my life and I’ll be forever grateful to my mother for passing on her love of books.

It is an interesting piece and raises some excellent points - especially about how books are valued by parents, not just levels of affluence. I’m a bit puzzled as to why they didn’t approach any libraries though - would have been ideal to point out all the free ways parents & littles can engage!

Libraries are great, especially with story times for little kids. I have friends who work in libraries, though, and it's not a unusual event for them to suggest reading to a baby/toddler and a parent to go, "Oh, no. They're too young" and brush it off. But I guess just keep spreading the message!

I remember once manning a bookstall at a school fete & offering a woman who bought baby clothes from the next stall some board books for her 1-yr-old grandson. ‘Oh, I don’t think he’s reading yet, Love,’ she said. I thought he might never be if he had to wait till he could read before he had a book.

Exactly! "Oh, they don't read yet," is such a common gut reaction for a lot of people. I wonder what can be done to educate more people on this, because having someone mention once or twice they can read TO the baby doesn't seem to do the trick.

Now that I’ve jumped ship into Registration, we always include a wee Bookbug card in the pack with their birth certificate - I add details of the closest library & Bookbug sessions. Thank goodness for Scottish Booktrust making such great cards! Health visitors are good at spreading the word too. 📚

I'm wondering if you have to go with the marketing principle that people have to hear something x many times before noticing it. Like a librarian is telling you to read to your baby and you think, "Nah, that can't be right." Maybe people need to hear it 12 times before it resonates? 😅

I could read before I went to school. Mum always read at bedtime, and then always encouraged me. It has led to a lifelong love of books.

Agree. My earliest memories are of my parents introducing me to books and reading. I must've been only 2 or 3. Consequently I always had the highest reading age in my class when I started primary school, & I now have a Masters degree. These things are not coincidental.
