I love the style of dithering in Japanese computer games of the era. Such a stark contrast to the art design of western games and it's always neat to see that DNA sneak through in relatively modern titles (like in the backgrounds of Phoenix Wright). ❤️
Yeah! Me too. I'm very fond of dithering overall, love seeing it used for transparency and smoke in Saturn games and other things, so the PC-98 checks all the boxes for me.
Western PC games were still using 320x240 resolution, but the PC-98 series tended to use 640x480 (mainly to accommodate the Japanese font). This meant twice the resolution, and with dithering, the artwork was much more gorgeous that would be expected. And you had artists who understood Anime as well
Are you on https://animetorrents.me? It's a private torrent tracker specializing in anime. If you would like, I can get you an invite as it is invite only unless you find one of their rare open windows of a few hours where they accept new registrations.
Could you hook me up with an invite? I’ve been looking for a private tracker for Anime, I can also offer an invite to IPT for you if you’re interested.
Aww, I totally recommend you play it! It's got oodles of charm and a top-tier fan localization. Just be prepared for some very maze-y dungeon delves in it, aha.
If you'd like an overview of the game, I wrote up a spoiler-free article on me and my GF's experience with it.
I remember my dad getting me a VHS tape of this show. I always wanted to finish the show but never got around to it. I know what I’m gonna be doing next month. 😁
Aww, enjoy! I picked up a couple of the old DVD box sets last month after playing through this PC-98 game and vibing with Slayers again after not watching the show for ages.
I really like the SNES Slayers game too, even if it was very weird as someone who had only watched the first season of the anime. Your party through most of the game was actually side characters from the anime, with you only getting the 'iconic' party at the final boss. Kind of neat twist.
You know, I thought it was just because I follow you and so I’m remembering it again, but I’m starting to notice a trend of Slayers coming back in fan art. I wonder if there’s a new project. Maybe I missed it?
It has a couple of design choices I feel aren't all that great but I enjoyed playing through it last month. Has oodles of Slayers charm to it and the fan translators/localizers did a fantastic job.

Played it through last month and had a blast with it.

Clicking guarantees a cosy read.
I hope Kyouka's work is preserved for the ages. If it disappears, that probably greatly cuts the number of people who will experience this game.
You can find pre-patched fdi files of the game but here's the patch upload on its own.

Of course it helps that I already love Slayers.
The 30th was five years ago. People started coming back when the celebrations started. Concerts, cafes, new merch, etc.
Kanzaka also announced another short story.
...Kind of wish it was novel 18, but we'll take what we can get.
