This is an outrageous policy change. Also, if you’re gonna do this then you gotta do it for drivers, too right? Given those are obviously far far more dangerous vehicles.

I think the city has to share revenue from car moving violations with the state, but not cycling. I wonder if that’s part of the motivation (in addition to anti-cycling/pro-car bias).

I am totally in favor of bike accessibility - more protected bike lanes, less space for cars.
And, bikers need to be ticketed to get them to stop treating traffic laws as optional. Get off the fucking sidewalks, stop at stoplights, ride the correct way down streets, signal your turns.

Should car drivers be ticketed? Because they are currently not ticketed for anything save the occasional fatality. For instance striking and killing a child in a crosswalk with your car is a $150 “failure to yield” fine

'we shouldn't have a law cause folks will ignore it' is not a reason to kill a safety law. If bikers dont obey safety laws the solution is to sharpen the penalty.
I also dont think bikers are going to drive a car to avoid tickets.

It’s not a ticket. They are being charged with a criminal offense. I hate cars and only bike and I would choose to drive or take a hired car in that scenario. So congratulations, you get everything you want. Fewer bikes and more cars to splatter pedestrians.

I don't know, but my guess would be this is about trying to arrest more immigrants; it's Eric Adams's backdoor into cooperating with Trump using an issue (bicyclists disobeying traffic laws) that public sentiment is strong on.
